(We did not do a rush) Trombone has great sound and looks to be of very good construction for a student trombone. I realize that this price point is supposed to be lesser made than the true professional trombones (and a bit smaller of course), but it really sounds and looks fantastic. Much better than I expected actually. The brass finish is pristine, and has silver accents. This is really a great horn at a very good price. The case was a great surprise, not hanging strings or cheesy zippers, it has rubber feet on the long side and the larger horn end (so it stands solid & won't topple over on its own). The case is made of very heavy canvas with double zippers, and extra snap enclosure to cover zippers when closed under the carry handle. Actually it has several handles to carry in different ways. the inside is custom fit for the horn with 2 protected door compartments for extra gadgets, and one larger rectangle zipper on the outside for music. The lining I expected to be a very inexpensive lining, but it is really very nice, thicker well made velvet like material. The 2 pcs. of the horn are in thin protective dust covers, and the overall presentation is quite lovely and everything seems of great quality. If you are looking for a young student, do not hesitate, this is the one for you! So pleased I did not buy a used one. A tenor is simply the voicing of the trombone. Standard trombones are tenor trombones. They make instruments of different qualities and price which can range from student, intermediate, and professional. Student models are the most affordable and are typically the ones you would want for a beginning student. Intermediate is of a greater quality than a student model, and could possibly include an F Attachment. Professional grade instruments are made with great precision and quality and cost the most. Professional typically include an F Attachment. So if you are looking for a trombone for a younger student, you would look for a student model, tenor trombone. An intermediate tenor trombone would be recommended for a player in middle school, or one that has roughly 4-6 years of experience. A professional tenor trombone would be recommended to an individual who is in high school, college, or has 8 or more years of experience and plans on performing on a regular basis. There are different opinions on what quality of instruments student should have at different stages in their playing career. But what I have explained above would be a good start. **Q: IS IT as good as one of the top brands?** A: NO. I have this trombone and the professional Conn 88HTO trombone. It is not close to being as good as the top brands at all. This trombone feels like the crappy $100 student rental horn that I started with my first year! Trust me, this horn won't be an upgrade, but a DOWNGRADE. **Q: My husband played in high school and I wanted to get him a trombone for Christmas, is there specific sizing I should find out before ordering?** A: Contra another answer, a large bore horn is not for everyone. Large bore trombones are typically "symphonic" horns, that while usually tenor rather than bass, are not especially easy to "fill up" or sustain and are also not usually what you might consider a "lead horn." My advice is when in doubt, ask. Find out what sort of horn he played before, find information on that horn and look for bore sizing that is similar to that. Personally, I played a King 3B (with F attachment) that I bought new in high school. The 3B was a medium to medium-small bore instrument. The late great Tommy Dorsey played the King 2B, a genuinely small bore trombone and maybe the greatest "lead trombone" of all time. I have also owned and played a Conn 88H, a true large bore symphonic instrument, and though I was a pkayer for many years and a music major in college, I personally never grew to love or even really like the 88H as it felt to me like I was trying to fill a vast void full of air. Just not the horn for me. My rule of thumb when it comes to playing for just joy's sake and you aren't looking to join the symphony? Medium small to medium bore. The case isn’t flimsy either, it withstands daily bus rides from school home. Would recommend super slick slide cream to go with. He’s doing great on this instrument. Very happy to find an affordable option for him. Purchased July 12, 2023. Update 11/13/2024. Still believe this is a great affordable option for those starting out. It isn’t as strong as other materials, tends to get dinged up with use by my middle school aged child. However it was a great starter option without breaking the bank. Oh and the case-I had to repair a handle this week from use, thread separated from the main case. Still holding up for now though.
