Buffalo River
I bought this book based on the great reviews of Tim Ernst's other guidebooks. This book does NOT have any of his pictures in it. The trail maps in this book are basic sketches that you can find in the free state publications. His knowledge of the area is extensive and the mileage factors are an important bonus over the park trail maps. If you already know which trail you want to hike and you want to stop and read the trail descriptions while you are hiking, this book would be perfect. But if you only have a few days to discover the Buffalo and are looking for a book to make it clear to you where to find the best trail to hike, you would have to read the entire book first, plus look at the pictures from his other books, to decide where to hike. And then figure more time to get there than is estimated by online maps. I was only there for 3 days. I travelled for at least 3 hrs every day just to get there. It is fabulous country to hike and very quiet and peaceful, at least in December. But find the ranger station or visitor station first if you need help choosing or finding a trail to hike there. NOTE all of the dates for services. You won't find any float trips here off season and there were NO waterfalls in December. Most of the creeks and scenic areas were dry as bones, except for the Buffalo and the major tribs.

A well-written, must-have guide for hiking the Buffalo River area
If you plan to hike in Arkansas' Buffalo River area, then this is the guide book for you. My wife and I have hiked many of the trails in the area and use this book to help us make our selections and get the most out of our (very few) free weekends. What I like about the book is the checklist on the back with listing of each trail and its length. Inside, each trail is shown on a map and a detailed description of what to expect, including how to get there (often a difficult task!). And by detailed, I mean DETAILED... such as specific things to look for, step-by-step turn directions, etc. We carry this book with us when we go hiking just to be safe. There are 37 trails listed in the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is hiking in the Buffalo River area. Be sure to check out Tim Ernst's other books for other Arkansas trails.

You're never going to go wrong with a Tim Ernst guide book. He is the guy in Arkansas who has floated or hiked it and took pictures and notes along the way.

Never disappointed with Tin Ernst
Tim Ernst is an expert on all-things-natural in Arkansas. I love my home state, and Tim provides good guidance and commentary of it in his hiking and trail books. You can't go wrong with any of his books (his prints are really nice, too - timernst.com).
