The army of Chuck
Anyone around in the 80's, when Nancy Regan told us to 'just say no', the US military was paying $900 for a hammer, and and Member's Only jackets were cool, will have most likely had the experience of seeing a Cannon film. For better or worse, the Golan/Globus group were quite prolific, and their movies tended to focus on visceral elements to satisfy the public, while other aspects like a credible plot, believable story, or realistic characters got swept under the rug, but hey, it worked pretty well and they made great gobs of money (I'd be happy with a single gob of money myself). This is the company responsible for such films as American Ninja and it's sequels, Sylvester Stallone classics as Over the Top (it's Rocky, but instead of boxing, it's arm wrestling...where's Joel and the 'bots when you need them?) and Cobra, Superman and it's sequels, Deathwish 2 thru 5, Missing in Action movies, Delta Force, and Invasion U.S.A, to name a few. During the 80's, the Cannon EZ Bake movie machine churned out up to 15 movies per year up until it's bankruptcy in 1990. One thing for certain, if it was a Cannon movie, you were pretty sure to get big guns, car chases, people getting shot, people getting blowed up real good, and lots of explosions, and Invasion U.S.A certainly doesn't disappoint. The antagonistic roles in these movies often was decided by how the political winds blew at the time. Be it the Russians or the Arabs or whoever angered us, you could be sure they would show up as an evil force in a Cannon movie bent on destroying the Amaerican way of life. Things you weren't guaranteed to get were cohesive plots, character development, continuity, and credibility. These were testosterone fueled, shoot-em up explosion orgies intended to entertain without requiring a lot of thought.Invasion U.S.A. features Cannon perennial Chuck Norris as Matt Hunter. Matt is an ex-operative of some government agency, we're never told which one, so I'll guess it's the CIA. He lives in the middle of a swamp, I'm assuming Florida, as much of the action in the movie takes place in Miami. Why he'd want to live in the middle of a swamp by himself I don't know, but maybe it has something to do with his past work with the CIA and just wanting to leave it all behind.Soon we are introduced to our lead bad guy, Mikhail Rostov, played by Richard Lynch. You may not recognize the name, but you'd most likely recognize the face. He's had quite a career in movies and TV, generally always playing a bad guy, due to his somewhat sinister look. Eventually we learn he's planning an invasion of the USA and a small army of armed men hit the beach. Their plans involve dressing up like authority figures, attacking civilians, and causing civil unrest. Apparently, Rostov and Hunter have a past history, as Rostov wants to eliminate Hunter. Once it's discovered that Rostov is in the US, the agency tries to get the now retired Hunter back into action, but he declines, as he says they should have let him kill Rostov when he had the chance, and it's now their problem, not his. Rostov, still bearing a super sized grudge, finds Hunter's place in the swamp and blows it up real good, but doesn't manage to kill Hunter. Along with his house, they also killed his friend, and now Hunter decides to take on the mission. Naturally the agency says that if he is caught, they will have to disavow any knowledge of Hunter. By now, I am starting to wish I could disavow any knowledge of this movie....We get various scenes of the bad guys blowing stuff up, killing Americans here and there, and talking about how weak we are, how easy it is to kill us. One scene in particular is when they pull up into a suburb and start blowing up houses. Rostov shoots like six houses with a bazooka, and it must have been one of those spiffy auto-loading kind as I never saw him reload once. I always thought bazookas were one shot deals, and needed to be reloaded after each use, but what do I know?Anyway, Hunter mixes it up with terrorists he finds, dispatching them usually with twin uzis strapped to his chest. He takes out large numbers of terrorists with much ease. This all leads up to a final confrontation, where a trap is set for the terrorist army, and the fall for it. The terrorists end up fighting the army in a fairly large battle, while Hunter and Rostov square off and guess who comes out a live in the end? Rostov is dispatched in a typically spectacular fashion, as is par for these kinds of movies, and the day is saved. Oh yeah, I alomst forgot, there is a side story involving a female reporter, but that goes nowhere, so it's not really worth mentioning.Given what this movie was, there a couple of things that kind of annoyed me. One was the attempt to present it as somewhat patriotic. This was a common theme at the time this movie came out, but looking at it now, it seems so transparent. And Chuck Norris really didn't get to use his martial arts skills in this movie. He hit and kicked a couple of people, but why cast a martial arts expert in an action movie if you aren't going to allow him to use his skills? Seems like such a waste. Even at the end, when he's fighting Rostov hand to hand, they could have incorporated some into that, but they blew it. Oh well....If you want a no brainer actioneer with lots of guns and explosions and little or not plot, then this movie is for you.

The only movie that will boost your testosterone levels
A pretty solid Canon release. If you're a fan of 80's action movies, it's a great way to spend an hour and a half. I found the premise of this movie pretty interesting and the characters enjoyable, but poorly written. Little backstory is provided for Chuck Norris' character and his adversary. We're to understand that the two wish death upon one another due to some past beef, and that's really it. The last 30 minutes felt like it dropped off into nowhere at the expense of a lengthy shootout scene that was shoehorned in out of obligation. There is no clear resolution at the end of the flick, but Chuck Norris gets to dish out cold vengeance, and that's all that really matters.Chuck Norris had a lot of great action movies in the 80's. He was painted to be some invincible master of combat in most of them, and it really shows in this one. It's goofy, it's corny, but it's what made the 80's memorable for a lot of us. Invasion USA is chock full of nonsensical violence with the occasional boobie, and I thoroughly enjoyed myself. 3.5/5 really.

All the Chuck in the world
Wow! Let's talk about a trailer overselling a movie. I happened upon the trailer for Invasion USA on another Blu-ray and it seemed to be a Christmas siege flick where Chuck massacres invading forces who have unwisely stepped into his neighborhood. That is absolutely not what this movie is.Chuck is Matt Hunter, a retired CIA heavy who now makes a living capturing alligators while living in his everglades shack. As he attempts to enjoy his quiet life a plot involving a Russian/Cuban/German/Communist/Whatever invasion very, very slowly boils in the background and eventually leads to all-out war declared on the streets of Miami (actually Atlanta). With a handful of ammo clips and grenades Chuck has it all sorted. The editing of this film is very poor, but not from a coherence angle. The story flounders, starts, stops, starts, stops, hits a dead end, starts again, stops, roll credits. We cut between Chuck being stoic and beardy and heavily-scarred maniacal villain Rostov (Richard Lynch, who looks like a burns victim combination of Rutger Hauer and Christopher Walken) with scenes of police detectives sandwiched in-between who walk around scenes of devastation bluntly repeating to each other what we've just seen happen. The mutual hatred between hero and villain is built up for the entire movie only for it to climax, rather disappointingly, in a generic, unfurnished office building while a full-scale war rages just outside. Another stupid aspect of this scene is that the intense gunfire and constant explosions are happening mere feet away but the sound editor was so lazy he couldn't be bothered mixing them in for the interior shots. My neighbors heard those sounds of war, and I had my volume at a medium level.Characters come and go without ever feeling important. No sequence of scenes seems to have any connective tissue. Bad guys plot some evil, Chucks appears out of nowhere and stops them, the police walk around and vocally echo what occurred, rinse and repeat. The movie comes across as a series of vignettes instead of a three-act structure. Why is Christmas even featured for five minutes and never mentioned again? What about New Year? That's not brought up days later either.Jay Chattaway's score is very boring and sounds a lot like leftover material from Silver Bullet only without the melody. Chattaway has only scored two movies since 1990 but he has worked extensively in television, especially in Star Trek. If the producers spent the money on a better composer it would have made up for the rest of the movie's shortcomings, but 1985 was a busy year for all the big names. For fans of Chuck this movie is a goldmine of ridiculous action, mindless killing, unbuttoned shirts, and macho hardassery. It's well directed by Joseph Zito, with visceral special effects. Nerds like me might get a laugh out of the sly Friday the 13th in-joke, Richard Lynch is an oddly expressive villain despite his extensive scarring, though it's all badly hurt by the choppy structure. Anyone looking for action driven by an actual story going to be quite frustrated. Perhaps the novelization makes more sense.I don't often say this, but Invasion USA could do with a remake. The themes of the movie seem to be quite ahead of their time and foresaw the worst nightmares of the Department of Homeland Security all the way back in 1985. It could work quite well with a smart and thoughtful script and a similar commitment to over-the-top violence it could work as an exploitative thriller in the vain of Taken and as a gung-ho war flick like American Sniper. I can see the dollar signs already.88 Films presents the film in a very grainy 1.85:1 1080p transfer. Invasion USA was shot by prolific B-movie cinematographer Joao Fernandez who used a lot of darkness and grit. All of that is preserved for the Blu-ray and I'm glad that no one interfered by turning up the digital noise reduction. The sound is a choice between original 2.0 or remixed 5.1, both in DTS HD-MA. There's a good amount of extras. Silver Bulletnovelization

Merci beaucoup Resen !

Double Denim Demolition
I remember being a kid when my folks came home with the VHS (ask your dad) of this puppy. Not previously exposed to the sheer awesomeness of either Sir Chuck of Norris or the offerings of messrs Golan and Globus (although I vaguely recalled the poster for 'Death Wish II' in my local fleapit with that familiar Cannon Group icon) - my action lovin' eyes were about to witness a feast of seismic proportions. And all it took was a guy in a cut-off denim shirt and a ginger beard. And I've never looked back since.Ex-CIA agent Matt Hunter (Chuck Norris acting out his lines as if he were reading the letters on the wall in an eye exam) is forced back into the family business of bustin' heads, blowing away bad guys and machine gunning all and sundry when comedy villain 'Rostov' (Richard Lynch) arrives on American soil with just one thing on his mind... domination. Problem is, Hunter knows this gnarly fella all too well and within no time at all these two rivals are locked in a battle royale that has to be seen to be believed. No, really. It has. From the decimation of urban America to a hardcore smackdown in a shopping mall, Hunter single handedly takes down these pesky villains by any means necessary: Machine guns, grenade launchers - he even drives a guy through a pain glass window for the hell of it - making sure Everest don't always fit the best. This movie, although not the best Norris/Cannon mash-up (for me, that has to be the vastly underrated 'Delta Force 2') is an action junkies wet dream come to life: No shades of grey here, its strictly cowboys and indians time with the dial turned up to 11 - a bombastic, explosive treat that knows its stupid and seem to have the good grace to let the audience in the on the joke, too.88 Films' UK Blu-Ray sports a fine transfer along with a plethora of extra features including: A commentary by ex-Impact editor Bey Logan, interviews with editor Daniel Loewenthal and writer James Bruner (who also wrote 'Missing in Action' and 'The Delta Force') plus the usual assortment of trailers and thankfully, the original artwork on the cover (along with a nicely printed slipcase). I would have liked to have heard from director Joseph ('Friday the 13th Part 4') Zito and even though a long shot, The Chuck himself, but I'll still take what I got. For the price Amazon are asking, I would say, like the movie, its a no-brainer - but I also forget most other adults see guff like this for what it is: Rubbish. However, for me its one of the action greats and I would defend it wholeheartedly - don't bother streaming, renting or borrowing. Go straight to Buy.
