A delightful read!
Annette is more than just a story teller. She has successfully shared the personal lives of her husband and family, as well as painting a real-world picture of wilderness life in northern Maine during the second quarter of the 20th century. As a boy in the 1950's and 60's I shared adventures in northern Maine with my father, a native Yankee from New Hampshire. Her descriptions brought those memories to life again. I also share an affinity with her husband Dave because 32 years of my life were spent as a fish and game warden on the West coast. There are not enough words to fully describe a career as a "Bush cop". Most acquaintances in law enforcement were of the opinion that game wardens must be crazy to do that job. Perhaps they were right, but we knew we were privileged to have the best career in the world!

A treasure of a story about a family in the 30s
I love old books about pioneers, trappers or Wilderness days, and was pleased to find this book offered on Amazon. Annette Jackson was a young woman who moved with her new game-warden husband to a rustic cabin in the North Woods of Maine. She describes in vivid detail all the beauty, wildlife, rivers, lakes and seasons she sees around her cabin, and also tells of exciting adventures she took with her husband as they went on his official rounds. She hunts, fishes, gardens and makes their cabin a cozy home, while raising their kids. She also tells of the logging camps and crusty old-timers she met during their years in the area. This book has many black and white photos of Annette, her husband and kids, the cabin and wilderness, and game taken while hunting. This re-published, updated version also fills the reader in on their later life and old age, as well as giving bios for their kids.A wonderful book about a time that's gone forever, and a precious time capsule that any fan of the Old Days will love!

Delightful and Nostalgic
I enjoyed the authors first person account as if I was hearing her tell it round her kitchen table over tea. It made me want to go and visit the places she lived so I could experience a taste of the way she lived.

Life was hard when you lived in the woods in the 30’s.
I liked the “down-home” writing and how she enjoyed each season. I thought the ending seemed rushed and weak.
