TEKTROOryx Front or Rear Silver with Standard Pad

I thought I’d give the Oryx a shot because they're relatively inexpensive and I’m glad I did. Setup was as easy as you could hope for but there were some key changes I made to these to make them 10x better. The first was using a separate more adjustable straddle cable. The straddle cable provided is probably fine but because it’s the kind with a fixed angle, you can’t get the yoke (the area where the brake cable splits into two) low enough to get maximum mechanical advantage. It’s not totally necessary but if you’re going to try to maximize your braking performance I would consider this change. The second and probably more crucial change is to upgrade the brake pads. The brake pads here are pretty weak but for about 12 bucks a set you can change them out to kool stops and you’ll be in business. Otherwise, the brakes themselves are super functional and straight forward — well worth the money.

I bought this to replace faulty Avid Shorty 4. I tried other cantilever brakes and long arms did not work on my cross bike.This one was easy(ish) to install, and does the job. I cannot tell the difference in performance.Good product.

These well-made short arm cantilever brakes have spring tension adjustments on both sides and no plastic parts to crack and destroy brake spring tension. That said, I had to return both sets because they don't fit the brake bosses of my classic Miyata 1000LT touring bike. I'll have to order a set of the Shimano cantilever brakes that only have spring tension adjust on one side and plastic rear spring cover houses that will inevitably crack, resulting in yet another brake replacement sequence. The Tektro Oryx is a great brake at a great price point.

Works perfect, easy to install

The Tektro Oryx are good quality cantilever brakes. The mounting screws and cable anchor screw are stainless steel. Arms are substantial, stiff aluminum alloy castings. The bushings have a captivated-but-free-to-rotate internal sleeve. The internal sleeves are fixed on the bicycle frame's brake bosses by the countersunk mounting screws.This makes wear internal to the brake arms instead of wearing out the brake bosses on the bicycle's frame. Also, since these brakes do not use the frame's brake bosses as a bearing surface, the condition of the bosses does not matter. The bosses can be worn and/or pitted, a common condition for older bicycles, but these brakes will still provide smooth, free action.I installed a set of these on a low-miles 35 year old Fuji hybrid, the original stamped-steel brakes squealed (even with new shoes), and the Oryx completely eliminated the chatter. Braking is smooth and powerful. Ditch the flexy stamped brake arms and the crappy Shimano Altus cracked plastic collars, then install a set of Oryx, you'll be glad you did.

These brakes look and work very nicely on the new touring bikes we build for our customers. They are easy to adjust and stop on a dime. Can't go wrong with Tektro!

Not much more can be said. They work well, don't cost much and , lie their high-profile CR720 cousins,the vertical pad adjustment allows the use of 650b wheels in frames built for standard MTB 26" wheels.
