There is a specific ritual to the end of a long day hunting upland birds. While the traditional bright orange gear is essential from sunrise to quitting time, there is a distinct sense of relief that comes when the guns are cased and the heavy hunting gear finally comes off. Lately, my favorite part of that transition has been sliding into the Beretta Sonoran Softshell Jacket. This jacket has quickly become my favorite piece of gear, and for good reason. It hits that perfect balance of being really warm, yet remarkably lightweight and easy to move around in. It is super comfortable, fits great, and just feels good the moment you put it on. The fleece lining keeps the chill out, while the wind and water-resistant material stands up to the weather without feeling heavy. Plus, with the vented back, it breathes well enough that you never get that sweaty, overheated feeling. It is practically tailor-made for those brisk West Texas winter evenings. The pockets are plentiful and placed exactly where you want them, and the zippers are smooth and work perfectly every time. Unlike some jackets, the neck enclosure has a great fit and feel, doing a fantastic job of keeping the warmth tucked in on the coldest of nights. Don't get me wrong, the orange gear does its job well out in the field. But when the hunt is over, the dogs are fed, and it’s time to just sit back and enjoy the evening under those beautiful, big Texas skies, this is the jacket you want to be wearing. It is fairly priced for the kind of quality you get, and I highly recommend both this jacket and the brand as a whole.

This is excellent gear for the range or any outdoor activity during the early spring or late fall. In my initial testing during an early morning commute, it provided ample protection against the wind and light sprinkles. As the temperature shifted in the afternoon, the ventilation did a great job regulating the warmth. All I needed was a single thermal long sleeve shirt underneath to stay comfortable between 40s and 60s. As for the fit, it runs true to size. I normally wear a size L with a 44 inch chest, and this jacket fits well. It’s a bit snug if I wear a heavy sweater as an under layer, but it's the ideal fit when paired with a thermal layer or t-shirt for a day at the range. The material has enough stretch to allow for great mobility, and the garment feels well fitted for active use. The pockets are positioned perfectly for easy access, and I especially like the deep inner mesh pocket inside one of the chest pocket for smaller essentials. The overall quality is exceptional. The stitching is solid and doesn't seem like it will tear easily. This definitely sits at a higher end price point for a softshell, but the technical features and build quality make it feel like a justified choice if you’re looking for a perfect gear. I adore this jacket. I'm mainly just bummed I got it going into the summer, because I've only been able to wear it a few times since it hasn't been cold enough to wear it. This thing is made super nicely, with smooth zippers, even lines throughout, and a super nice fit. Have a few others that are similar, but one killer feature is the hideaway hood. I know it sounds nuts that that is such a big feature, but when it's missing, you notice it, so being able to always have a hood ready to pop out is so nice.
