KidCo the only way to go
I have an older KidCo gate that is super sturdy. We put it downstairs to keep pets out of a room. With a baby here, we now needed a new one for the top of the stairs. I purchased an extra tall one from a baby store but that was very flimsy feeling and I had to adjust it all the time. It was also a pain for anyone to open. My 6yr old couldn't do it himself.I saw this on a black Friday sale and thought I'd give it a try. It's super strong and sturdy (even though they say it doesn't go at the top of stairs) My 6yr old has to bounce on the foot release to open it. It opens but the gate remains exactly how I set it up. No readjusting for me.There was a learning curve and I read reviews to figure out the best method. You step on the release and hear it click. Then remove your foot and push/pull open the gate.It is noisy but that reassures me that the gate is closed. The previous gate I had (that was flimsy) was supposed to self close but it never did. This has a strong magnet that ensures it closes each and every time. When you're carrying the baby or groceries, using your hands isn't always an option. This foot release is super nice to have.Definitely recommend.

Best Hand's Free Gate Yet!
This is the second hand's free gate we tried and it's "outstanding" compared to the other one. I know it's pricy, but well worth it when you compare it to the other at half the price.Thankfully we've raised our child in a working household, so the noise isn't a factor as the other reviewer's spoke about. It's not silent, but it's not anywhere near the level that would wake our child from sleep. Imagine you cough in the same room as your sleeping child; if they can handle that they can handle this gate. If a cough would wake your child, then there probably isn't a hand's free gate made that would work for you.The installation instructions are pretty difficult to follow if you don't have a flair for doing something like this, but after some study I think even the most mechanically challenged will have no trouble getting it installed. There are no tools required unless you don't have enough hand-strength to tighten it yourself. If not you may want to use a pair of pliers to make sure things are snug enough. My wife came up with a good idea to insure it's secured in the doorway properly. She had me buy a couple pairs of those brackets that you would use to install a closet hanger rod. The rubber spindles fit perfectly into them; so even if you can't tighten them enough for your comfort (or just want the extra assurance), it prevents the gate from slipping out of position. An extra $4.00 for a ton of extra peace-of-mind.Baby Bargains rates this brand of safety gate as the best; I can see why now that we've got one installed.

WORTH IT! Especially if you don't want to use screws in the wall
This is the best gate I've ever used.I live in an apartment and can't screw things into the wall. Like most people I know, I was apprehensive about it being sturdy and staying in place. Especially because I have a very rambunctious child. It stays in place, it is easy to use, and it is WELL WORTH IT! I wouldn't want to move this around my house all the time, it stays stationary between my kitchen and living room.I just wish I had purchased 4 instead of 1 for the rest of my house!!!!

Broken after four days
We bought two of these gates because of the foot-operated (no-handed) release and the attractive design. The gate comes with an assortment of extenders to enable it to work in a wide range of openings. That's the good. The bad is that the instructions are not very clear and over-complicate assembly by failing to illustrate and identify parts called out by arbitrary name. The actual installation is easy. The main problem with these gates is the construction of the footlatch. Out of the box it feels a bit stiff but works ok, You have to push down with your foot, remove your foot, then swing open the door. But after a few days, instead of breaking in, it gets more & more difficult to press until finally the latch stops working entirely. Seems like there's a lot of plastic in there that just isn't up to the task. Like I said, we bought two of these, and returned both after a few days. Hats off to Amazon for a smooth return process. Our search for a reliable gate continues...

AMAZING CUSTOMER SERVICE
So i got this gate and installed it very easily. it is truly hands free and i am very happy i found it. i had a little problem with the unit which from what i looked up was a rare thing, i contacted kidco and they were amazing immediately took care of it. they were so helpful that i am pretty much sold that they have well built items and like anything out there there can be some bad ones but for a company to stand by their product in such a way is so rare these days that i am sold on them and plan to order more kidco gates.as a note this is not for stairs sadly that is where i wanted to put it but is is great for my kitchen as i will often being carrying a child and groceries and will not have a hand. its construction is very very sold more so than others i have purchased and returned because i was worried about how sturdy they were.defiantly try this product it is great and a great company

Great gate for pets!!
I use the gate for my small dogs. I actually taped the lever open and it magnatizes closed behind you and you don't have to keep using the foot lock. I do not think I would like this gate with a baby. Its hard to open especially on uneven floor or near stairs. Gate foes stay closed very well with magnets for small pets. Gate does not have a door handle that opens gate. Its foot only. Why I didn't give great review. Very loud and hard to open when using foot lock.

Loud but really good
We bought this baby gate and I do have to agree with the other reviewer that it is loud. I do not like that about it. It opens both ways and swings shut. We ended up buying a second one to put on our two older children's doors so the baby couldn't get into their rooms (it has a swing shut feature that latches tight) so we put up with the noise since they cannot always be trusted to shut the gate. We are considering buying a third but at $100 bucks a pop we are considering other options. If these were about $30 bucks cheaper I wouldn't hesitate even with the loud closure.
