The book content is good. It expect an user level familiarity to unix Or linux.It teaches programming and using tools in unix/ linux

One of the best book to understadlnd unix internals amd system calls. I ordered last year and still enjoying the book. Nicely explained the usage of system calls with examples. Also, Posix standards are widely taken into consideration.

Sir. Richard. Stevens. Himself. Do I need to say more?I've got all his books and almost all of them are my favoties. I also have all three editions of this book. This book is a classic. As long as there will be Unix (forever), there will be this book. Of course I haven't read it all but I've consulted it hundreds of times. This is the definitive reference book for every serious and professional UNIX systems programmer. Every concept is explained clearly, there are thousands of code examples, hundreds of illustrations and graphics that show how various concepts relate.I've placed this book #25 in my Top 100 Programming, Computer and Science books list:[...](If this link gets removed google for >>catonmat top 100 programming computer science books<< to find my article.).

I own all three versions. This book is still THE authoritative text on this subject.

To understand OS you need not only a Dinosaure book but also a practical Operating system book.You will find out how the theoretical knowledge in the standard OS text is applied in the Unix system.If you are an Univ student, It is not a bad idea to develop your understanding of the level the books suggest.Last Christmas, I have to get a lecture from a lot of bragging Phytoon programmers who do not know what isOS, what is Data structure, what is Algorithms.If you intend to be a serious software engineer, pick this one.

The book is extremely well organised and extremely clear in explaining all the different concept. Extremely recommended if you want to really understand what's happening under the hood.
