From the Manufacturer From the mid to the late 1920’s, and even in 1931, the world racing scene was dominated by Mercedes-Benz, with its legendary supercharged models of the S series. Owing to its overwhelming power and great size, the SSKL was called the “White Elephant.” 1931 was a very special year for the talented driver Rudolf Caracciola and his SSK. The Mercedes-Benz manufacturer in Untertürkheim was only able to provide limited support in the midst of the worldwide economic crisis. Despite this lack of support, Caracciola, with his lightweight SSKL, managed to score two sensational victories in 1931. His greatest victory undoubtedly came in the Mille Miglia, held from April 12-13, 1931. Shortly afterwards, however, the public got to cheer his next triumph in the Mercedes SSKL. On July 19, Caracciola and his “White Elephant,” with its distinctive black leather stripe on the engine hood, finished first in the Grand Prix of Germany. The race took place at the legendary Nordschleife of the Nürburgring, also known as the “Green Hell.” The drivers had to master 22 laps for a total of 501.8 km. “Caratsch” and his co-pilot Wilhelm Sebastian covered that distance in only 4 hours, 38 minutes, and 10 seconds, with an average speed of 108.3 km/h. The “SSKL” marked the zenith of the legendary S series, which enhanced the reputation of “Mercedes-Benz” all around the world. CMC proudly introduces our replica of the Mercedes-Benz SSKL with starting number 8, which Rudolph Caracciola drove to victory in the 1931 Grand Prix of Germany at the Nürburgring. Only six of the 300 horsepower “White Elephants” were produced by Mercedes-Benz. The SSKL was a lightweight version of the SSK. Any equipment that was unnecessary was removed from the Grand Prix race car, including headlights, fenders, one spare tire, and the top. This model is limited to 4,000 pieces worldwide.
