What a beautiful book! Now I'm thinking of getting another one as a gift.

Recreated from original art by three of the finest living artists of the Gond tribe Ram Singh Urveti, Bhajju Shyam and Durga Bai, the book has been silk-screened by hand on black paper, every page of this book is an original numbered art print. Each painting is accompanied by text which invites the viewer into the Gond imagination - where the practical, aesthetic and spiritual aspects of the natural world are inseperable. As traditional forest dwellers, the gonds believe that trees are central to life. During the day, trees work hard, providing shade, shelter and nourishment for all. But at night, when all the daytime visitors have left, the spirits in the trees reveal themselves. It is these luminous spirits that are hauntingly captured in the book."Gond art is not concerned with realism, perspective, light or three dimensionality. It signifies rather than represents, deriving its energy from flowing lines, intricate geometric patterns and the symbols that connect human beings and workings of the cosmos. This has got to be one of the most unique and unusual books I have ever owned. It brings together two of my favorite things: art and trees. Each page of art in this book is hand silk screened on heavy black paper. Once the pages are silk screened, they are bound together in a very appealing binding. The prints depict trees from India, along with a bit of the history and folk lore associated with each particular tree. This book is a numbered edition of only 2,000 copies. You can see how it was created by going to You Tube and typing in "tara books". Definitely a small scale, local operation. The artists are amazing. And the price is very inexpensive for a book of hand printed silk screened prints.
