#1 National bestseller "[pillsbury] is correct to assert that China constitutes, by far, the biggest National challenge to America's position in the world today."-The wall Street Journal for more than forty years, the United States has reached out to China, helping it develop a booming economy and take its place on the world stage, in the belief that there is little to fear-and everything to gain-from China's rise. But what if the Chinese have had a different plan all along? The hundred-year marathon reveals China's secret strategy to supplant the United States as the world's dominant power, and to do so by 2049, The one hundredth anniversary of the founding of the people's Republic. Michael pillsbury, who has served in senior National security positions in the U.S. Government since the days of Richard Nixon and Henry Kissinger, draws on Chinese documents, speeches, and books (many of them never translated into English) to reveal the roots of this strategy in traditional Chinese statecraft and track how the Chinese are putting it into practice today. Pillsbury shows how American policy make Rs have been wilfully blind to these developments for decades--and he includes himself in that critique, as he was once a leading voice in favour of aiding China. He also calls for the United States to design a new, more competitive strategy toward China as it really is, and not as we might wish it to be. Now featuring a new afterword, the hundred-year marathon is a wakeup call for all Americans concerned about how we have misread the greatest National security challenge of the twenty-first century. Review: Chinese Stratagems of mastering the Arts of deception - A must read book to understand the Chinese mind & the ancient stratagems thats their guiding light. The writer explains lucidly how Chinese have been successful in befooling the Americans that they are moving towards democracy. While, making Americans dole every possible help to their own detriment in long run. They have always been working to outpace & outpost the hegemon USA without letting them know that they are constantly scheming behind their back. Review: A shrewd assessment of China under the Communist Party - The book reminded me of the adage, 'Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown'. The book gives us the American viewpoint on China's rise in the last few decades and the unease in America with that. The author has lots of inside knowledge about China. Basically he argues that Chinese culture is such that China will use any means even unethical ones to become the future hegemon of the world. Apparently Chinese culture allows the use of deception even in peace time. A perusal of the book certainly gives the reader an increased understanding of Chinese foreign policy. I recommend this book for readers who are interested in understanding Chinese behavior. The only caveat is that since the author is a citizen of the current global hegemon the reader should be alert about any bias.

A good read
Mr Micheal has wonderfully laid out the marathon strategy of China. Having read little bit about China I can say that his arguments have merit. A few new terms this books talks about which are gen not used like the concept of Shi, warring states strategy etc are worth researching further to demystify the dragon better. Overall a great book and a must read for Chinese enthusiasts.

Great knowledge for current times
It’s a well researched book written by a person with tons of experience in dealing with China. Michael has been quite honest about his mistakes in dealing with China and the mistakes of his fellow colleagues. He has also shared quite transparently as to what was amiss in their understanding and how over time and with more experience they were able to develop a better understanding of China’s policies, procedures, thinking and approach. A commendable piece which is so relevant in today’s times.

Average
This book was recommended by nothing less than Mr Arun Shourie in a talk, however, it does not live up to the expectations as the stuff is natural and normal logic, what is probably coming out in the open. The subject is much more vast, for example, the author has studied in Taiwan and, I may be wrong with my limited guesses, but then there are a host of other sub-cultures in China- Cantonese, Hakka and others, obviously Taiwan will teach such things to him - that their government is hostile to the world, because they are hostile to their freedom.

Stuff you don‘t find in other books on China
Highly interesting, especially if you already did some reading on China‘s strategy and future development. Very different but well researched views in this book. The 1-star review here on Amazon (book shows racism, comparable to Elders of Zion Protocols) actually seems to prove the point of propaganda warfare and a West too ignorant and self-centred to understand long term thinking with a distinctly different world view. CHINA’S SECRET STRATEGY TO REPLACE AMERICA AS THE GLOBAL SUPERPOWER
1.Engagement brings complete cooperation(婚約発表) 2.China is on the road to democracy 3.China, the fragile flower(今にも枯れる) 4.China wants to be-and is- just like us(憧れは米国) 5.China's hawks(鷹派) are weak 確かに、米国は騙され続けてきた。
