In the 1850s, Ellen Ternan is a minimally talented actress who catches the eye of the hailed British author, Charles Dickens. Bored with his intellectually unstimulating wife, Dickens takes the educated Ellen has his mistress with the cooperation of her mother. What follows is a stormy relationship with this literary giant who provides her with a life few women of her time can enjoy. Yet, Ellen is equally revolted by Charles' emotional cruelty and determination to keep her secret. In that conflict, Ellen must judge her own role in her life and decide if the price she pays is bearable.

Quite nice, but could have been made better
Quite a nice movie, but felt that it could have been made more detailed.

Awesome!
Well, what happens when two of your favourite people act together on a project? The result ought to be awesome! Love you, Ralph Fiennes and Felicity Jones. The presence of Kristin Scott Thomas reminded me of The English Patient. Go for it, English Literature lovers and enthusiasts!! This is the extraordinary story of the most famous Victorian writer- Charles Dickens.

Great Film/ Misleading Title
Don't let the Marvel Comics/Sci-Fi title fool you---This is an exquisitely crafted film in every detail. Unlike many "period films" the "costumes 'have the look of real clothing-almost as if the designer raided the archives of the "V&A". My husband said--"I feel like I am looking at actual rooms--not the usual "sets". We agreed this film feels so authentic,it was as if we were peering through a keyhole into the past-observing people's private lives...no one could be caught "acting". The script is beautifully written-Charles Dickens was a "rock star" in his day and the film shows the perks and the consequences. However the story centers around the young girl who became his mistress--the consquences for her and the wife he abandoned while maintaining his upright public profile. Felicity Jones is flawless in her portrayl of Nelly, the young woman who was forced by the mores of her day to live her life in secret. If you like special effects and nonstop action-this is not the film for you. However, if you enjoy the films of Luchino Visconti and David Lean, then you will love this one! It is filmed at the speed of life, giving the characters time to think and react just as we do in real situations. I could not detect a false note or a single weak link in this film....I don't think it will get much attention but to my mind it is a masterpiece.

The Invisible Woman.
A beautifully filmed period drama based on the real-life relationship between Charles Dickens and the actress Nelly Ternan, a woman 27 year younger than him. It's a slow-moving story told in flashback from Nelly's point of view and is therefore sympathetic to her situation (Dickens treated his wife rather badly, though she remained loyal to him after their separation) as a very young woman in a precarious profession.Evocative as it is, it doesn`t quite catch fire as a romance (if that is it's intention) but as a portrait of the relationship it is a sturdy, sensitive (if rather sober) costume piece intelligently realised. The UK DVD release has optional subtitles in English and 10 minutes of cast interviews as the only extra.3 ½ stars.

A simply beautiful film based on the book by Claire Tomalin
A simply beautiful film based on the book by Claire Tomalin. I saw this movie in the cinema and was absolutely stunned by it - really gorgeous art direction, lighting, acting, writing.... Ralph Fiennes directed himself in the lead, but there is no trace of self-indulgence, he's the perfect Dickens, and Tom Hollander is the perfect Wilkie Collins, and... Oh, just watch this lovely film! It's a terrific story (and it's true, pretty much all authenticated) and just brilliantly brought to the screen. Should have won all the awards going!

As cold as yesterday's mashed potatoes
Unfortunately I couldn't warm to this period romantic drama about Charles Dickens affair with a much younger woman. This is a fairly vapid film which failed to engage me at all. Ralph Fiennes does a good job playing the celebrated Victorian author ,but I didn't think there was much on screen chemistry between him and the passionless, dreary Felicity Jones, which therefore rendered the whole romantic relationship rather unconvincing. The film also has a disjointed feel to it with much of it consisting of flashbacks and reminisceses. Rather than being an uplifting celebration of a joyful inter generational romance , "The Invisible Woman" was a fairly low key, chaste and downbeat film that won't live long in the memory.
