I have Never either owned or used a serger... How is this one for a newbie...with 50 years general sewing experience?

I love mine.  I am a professional seamstress, and use mostly industrial equipment on heavy fabrics.  When I need to do lighter weights, I use this one.   I like that the rolled hem width is adjustable, and the tensions are easily laid in with the dials. The removable plate makes it easy to go from seams to cuffs.  I love using it for sewing the tops on Christmas stockings.  I have had mine for about eight years.  Granted, it is low usage, but it is very reliable when I do use it.

Hello!  Before I purchased my 14CG764 in May, I wrote to Singer with the same question.  I was told that the "CG" and the "SH" are applied  by different vendors.  I do know that machines that are labeled "HD" are heavy duty, "CG" is commercial grade, and "SH" is a household machine.  I would suggest looking at the resources tab on Singer's site for each machine and choose the features that best support your intended sewing.  Scroll down the page and you can find the instruction manual and product sheet on these sites:  CG is http://www.singerco.com/products/1365/14cg754-pro-finish#type-resources and SH is at http://www.singerco.com/products/1601/14sh764-stylist#type-resources.  I love my new machine and have no problems with recommending it.

Does this machine come with a tool box?

It comes with a screw driver and tweezers to thread the machine and needles but no tool box.

Is there a difference between this and the "scholastic" model, 850SCH?

The Singer models 14CG754 and 850SCH are very similar.  The main difference is cosmetic.
