Expectation was high.......but.......not at all satisfied......

I had this back when I was in college and lost it. It was recommended by a buddy of mine. Loved it and had to buy it again, in its original cover too.

This arrived swiftly., clean new book,great to have spanish one side and enlish the other.Il Postino was the best film ever.

Wanted to read the poems after seeing the film in my Italian class. Neruda is a noteworthy poet and one that appeals to a great many.

Charming, fairly approachable, lyrical, descriptive style.

While reading the poems in this book I was however stunned into silence. These poems are best read for pure pleasure. The only thing that did surprise me about this collection was the little touches of horror I'd never noticed in other Neruda poems. Like in the poem about the mermaid she swims away to her death. Why could she not have swum away to freedom? Or as Neruda contemplates a woman being silent he also wishes her dead, but at the end is glad she isn't. I guess I thought this book would only be filled with the most romantic poems ever written so I was a little surprised by sad endings and morbid contemplations. And yet, still the poems were beautiful. Perhaps some of the most beautiful poems I've ever read. If you are new to Neruda's poetry this would be a great place to start. If you have read many of his poems, this book may have a few surprises.
