Mastering Maya 2014
These books cover all the features in a specific version of maya. It's good if you're looking to learn all the details of each function of maya. I like to have the discs to work from, but you can download files from a website to work through the tutorials.

very useful
Well it is a great book, very thorough and detailed, covering almost everything very clearly and concisely... things that it doesnt seem to cover well? Dynamics, scripting... but it's not supposed to do that so it doesnt matter. Now, I had Mastering 2012 and there is not much difference between those. So if you have that one, wait until next year!

Excellent content, terrible binding
man I tell you what, this book started falling apart within a week of using it, even with me properly conditioning the binding. I'm very displeased with this. However, the content of the book is well written and a great reference book too.The other thing I have to say is you could do a better job in getting the owner hooked up with the exercise files. The link in the book is incorrect!! I had to do several internet searches before finding it on the same forwarded site but in a buried location in the shop on the downloads page somewhere. This sucks! The hours I have wasted on this one area is unreal. I'm very computer savvy and this was a job!I would ask my money back but I like the content of the book so well. I'll just keep gluing the mess and next time I will get an electronic version of things from this company.Content 5*Binding -5*Finding Exercise files 1*

Cut and paste from the 2013 edition much?
Outdated content that was obviously cut and pasted from the 2013 edition including errors in depictions of the new mental ray interface, no coverage of the modeling toolkit, and incomplete coverage of render passes. The editing for this book is so poor that it references Introducing Maya 2013 as a preliminary in Chapter 1 (it correctly references 2014 in the introduction). Further, there is absolutely no author support as claimed in the introduction. Don't waste your money on this when there are numerous superior options, many of them free.

A gift for my son
He is delighted with it trying to learn a new trade tired of construction. It is winter in Oregon so if you are in construction and you do not work out in the freezing rain you do not eat!

The best Maya 2014 reference for intermediate users
I rarely buy printed books on tools that iterate so fast, but the "Mastering Maya..." books are the only ones I buy regularily each year. I simply find it the best reference books to have on Maya. Please note, though, that the book is probably not ideal for you if you have no experience yet in Maya - this book assumes that the reader already knows basic workflows in Maya. The topics and assignments provided in this book are more advanced than, say, in a Beginner's Guide, but are described very precisely and are easy to follow. Also, Todd Palamar offers a lot of background, additional insights and other valuable information. It is noticeable that the author has years of practice with Maya and also production experience. Most important topics are covered, although some not in all detail. If you want, for example, a primer on dynamics or character animation, you are better off with a specialist book (like the "Studio.." series). For an intermediate to advanced Maya user, this book is a great way to keep up-to-speed with the latest features and learn a few new tricks now and then.
