Modern Chord Progressions: Jazz & Classical Voicings for Guitar

Ted is the greatest
Skip any Jazz Degree program and their stupid concept of "chord cells" and just study everything and every video of him on YT by Ted Greene and branch out from there. Nobody in their right mind studies jazz anyways with the intention of making any money or getting laid. Get Single Note Soloing Books 1 and 2, and Chord Chemistry, too. He is long gone but has a wealth of free information via his estate and former students on tedgreene dot com as well. This book is a great platform to spring board from.

One of my favorite music books!
With the purchase of "Modern Chord Progressions" a few weeks ago, I completed collecting all of Ted Greene's amazing publications. His approach to writing may be considered a bit unorthodox, or dated, to some as they were originally written in the 1970's using less sophisticated publishing techniques (For example, all of the chord diagrams are filled in by hand and there are notes and arrows scribbled in by hand on the pages). The result is that they have a homespun feel to them and I actually really like it; it's refreshing, in contrast to most of the slicked out books offered these days, and perfectly complements his warm, genuine, and humorous personality which shines through in his writing.I've learned, and continue to learn, so much from them as they contain a wealth of information that will, literally, take years to get through. The depth and detail with which he delves into applied music theory and harmony is incredible, so be forewarned. His books are not for the beginner, the timid, or the impatient, as each books require a great deal of perseverance to get through its myriad of examples, ranging from simple to extremely difficult, even for seasoned players. However, the effort is well worth it and you will grow so much as a musician, particularly in the all-important skill of voice leading, of which he was a master.I was sad to learn that he passed in 2005 at only 58. However, his legacy and contributions to the field of music education live on in his wonderful books that I highly recommend for anyone seeking the ultimate teacher; someone who can help guide you along the incredibly rewarding journey to musical knowledge and mastery.

A Guitar Bible to study indefinitely
This thing is intense! But I think that I find this one more helpful than the chord chemistry book. If I could only buy one, it would be this one. The chord chemistry book is worth it though, its just a lot. I'll be working through both of these books for the rest of my life. If you're looking for a no-nonsense intense study of chords and progressions, these are for you. Not for beginners, and it expects you to have a base knowledge of music theory. My problem is that I've bought so many books and most of them seem teach you the basics and leave you hanging after the most basic progressions. This one pretty much starts out hard.

Immensely helpful book
Seriously helpful book for intermediate-advanced players willing to invest the time and (if you're like me and not so up on your theory) cognitive resources to work through it as Ted designed it.Some folks are not into Ted's idiosyncrasies as a writer or music instructor, but I love them. His humor and quirky approach to this material makes it approachable and fun, but still showing reverence to the magic of music. For anyone interested in this book or area of study, I strongly recommend watching as many videos of Ted Greene's playing and instruction as possible. Especially useful for me is the 'Session with the Stars' video and PDF diagrams. Look for it online.

This book is a absolute goldmine of beautiful chord voicing melodies presented in short examples of I-vi-ii-V sequences and many permutations that cover extensive harmonic ground and copious use of substitution. Studying this book in earnest will give a jazz guitar a totally comprehensive vocabulary of voicing and chord melody movements for playing jazz guitar, whether it be solo or with a bassist. Voicings used go from basic to highly colorful, including extensive study of quartal voicings, cluster voicings, rootless and root voicings, and more. What makes it special is that the material is presented in a highly musical manner of beautiful example after example, painstakingly written out by hand without losing sight of making each example a small piece of beautiful music. A guitarist could study this book for a lifetime. If anything, it can be overwhelming. This is a major contribution from the legacy of the one and only Ted Greene.

Great book! Takes a lot of work but is worth it.
Excellent book! It will take a lot of time to get all of this stuff under your fingers but it has helped me already with understanding the fret board better and how chords work, in addition I have learned a lot of cool chords I can use when composing stuff. The possibilities are endless! Lots of chord progressions. Just pick out the stuff that fits your needs. Some of the chords are impossible to play (for me anyway) due to the large stretches involved.

One of the Best Chord Books Ever
Ted Greene wrote only four books - but they are all classics. This one is much more a reference manual than a progressive method. It will cover all you'd ever want to know about progressions. Any pne who's anyone will have learnt something from this book and the others written by Ted Greene at some time in their learning career. Complexity Warning! Don't expect these books to be easy - they are the workings of a player who spent a lifetime developing and researching the ideas in the book. So it's for Grade 8 players and above. Don't buy this book as a beginner or rock player looking for a way into jazz - this book's for jazzers wanting to go deep. This book is one of those from the far end of the spectrum and aimed without compromise at advanced players at Music College, in full time guitar school, or pro and semi-pro gigging jazz players.Nov 2015 update -Ah Ha! You can now use the Look Inside button to see the format. Looked? Ha - I told you it was dense. If you take a look at the new Trinity Plectrum Guitar Syllabus for 2016 onward you'll see Ted's stuff is beyond Grade 8. Trinity's course is as near to a Graded Jazz course of Exams you'll find IMHO. Here's a link. [...]

Possibly the most difficult guitar teachings i've ever came across
This books difficulty is beyond any other material i've ever seen for guitar online or in books, i have no idea how far i'll get with this but anything that works out your brain that much can only lead to good things. It's clear to understand but approach with caution there's no quick way to absorb all the information this has to offer so it'll last you a long time.

Ted Greene.. is there a chord he doesn't ...
Ted Greene ..is there a chord he doesn't know? Judging from this book no. The layout may confuse you at first but stick with it and mad chords will be yours
