A startlingly beautiful book at an amazingly low price
This book presents the beauty and intricacy of flowering plants with both great artistic depth and botantical accuracy. As a university biologist, I am strongly tempted to use this as a supplement in my introductory biology course, which certainly speaks for my opinion of it's scientific worth -guaranteed by the participation of Kew Gardens in the book's production. Yet, at the same time, it makes me want to grab my pencils and sketchbook and draw the plants I see around me.This lovely volume is a rare example of a balance of science and art, where no care has been taken to determine where the one ends and the other begins, because no such division exists in the real world; instead, is imposed upon nature by the limitations of most human minds. Place this book on a table where guests can easily see and wander through the pages. It is also just the book to be enchanted by on a rainy day, or when snow stacks on the window pane and the soul yearns for spring.Oh so easily, five stars.

Amazing book BUT DAMAGED
I didn’t want to leave anything fewer than 5 stars because this book is simply amazing, but the corners came bent and crinkled, and one is significantly damaged.I bought this book for myself at Barnes & Noble a few months ago and fell in love with it. It’s stunning, the pictures are beautiful, and while it’s packed with great information, it’s not overwhelming. I recommend this book to anyone who loves plants or is looking to learn about them.I actually bought this as a gift for a friend of mine who is a tattoo artist. As I mentioned, the photos are stunning and rich with detail, and it’s a great reference for any kind of artist.I highly recommend the book, but maybe not from amazon. I hope my damaged book was just a fluke and that this isn’t the norm for them.

Outstandingly Beautiful and Well Done
I'm an old serious nature boy, master gardener, photographer specializing in wild alpine wildflowers, and book lover. I have many natural science books spanning the gamut from plate tectonics to microphotography, from technical specialties to lovely photography. This is one of the most beautiful and and interesting books I have ever seen. In addition to the outstanding photography and layout, and even though I studied botany at university and have explored plant science over many years, this book still has lessons for me, in part because it incorporates the most recent new discoveries. Yet it is simple enough for a child, a non-scientist, someone who has never taken a course in botany, to enjoy. Even at full price its an incredible value. If you like plants at all, you should own this.

Beautiful Illustrated Book
The book is absolutely gorgeous. Dislike that they were not shrinkwrapped, just put in a too-large box with no packing materials. I bought two (as gifts) and 1 had slid out part way of its jacket which resulted in a few creases in the jacket. Not bad enough to return but still disappointing since it's intended as a gift.

Update---> this beautiful book is back in print with a new title +cover: PLANTS
UPDATE---> This book has been reprinted as a second edition called "Plants" and has a new cover.Thank you Smithsonian our American institution for all you do giving we the people the beauty of art and science, here botanical science, are woven together in such a lovely book more for pleasure than mere coffee tables ❤❗Sadly, I moved back to my own house and could not take with me this massive book. I bought this book as a new publication with Amazon promotion bringing the price down to only about $20+tax. Someday I hope to see the book again, I gifted my copy to my dear neighbor. I hope the book is re-printed some day.I see Amazon promised for "children's age". We are adult artists. I am so sad for my country to undervalue all that has made us great whereby Smithsonian has to market educational gifts as though only for children.

It’s amazing Buy it period!
Seriously!!!!Buy it...So this particular textbook book whatever would be amazing for any age group from 9 to 90! What are you have an extensive knowledge of clans or no nothing at all it is the a pitta me of a perfect book! The initial pages are very engaging and insightful colorful and even a five-year-old would enjoy them! That being said a 60-year-old would as well! I absolutely love this book for myself but I am also using it to teach my children during the COVID-19 situation and they are also enjoying it as well even though the last thing they want to do a schoolwork! They’re so thrilled about this book that they are even letting me add to their schoolwork and learn more! If that’s not a rave review I don’t know what is
