Outstanding book on the Columbia River from the headwaters to the mouth of the river
If you have even the remotest interest in the Columbia River, you will want to read this book. I live in a Columbia River tributary in eastern Washington. Last summer I went to western Canada, and saw a more wild river. I visited the Columbia River Wetlands, the largest wetlands in North America, outside of Golden, BC. The Columbia River in Canada is more wild and scenic than it is in Washington/Oregon. Cody is a fine writer and really gives you a flavor for how the river is different in the various places it runs through. He gives you very good history of the wild river before hydroelectric dams and how it is now. He weaves in the importance of this river to Native Americans and uses one of their tales to describe how the river was carved. His canoeing odyssey brought him other fine tales to tell. I can't recommend this book highly enough.

Adventure and Columbia River history combined!
As a Washington State resident, I see the Columbia river all the time. It fascinates me. It's literally everywhere. I got this book not because I canoe (I don't) but I love reading about adventurous journeys such as this and also it's about the Columbia. I got my Columbia river history fix AND an adventurous journey book rolled into one. I most enjoyed when he'd meet up with people along his journey and interact with them. I think this is a fine book and I'm very glad I got it.

Even better the second time.
This is a re-read for me and a gift for a niece and husband who live near the River. It was recommended to meyears ago by a dear friend and Columbia River trailblazer. I was pleased to read the postscript in the currentedition, a very soulful book.

Enjoyed very much
This is a great book if you like travel adventures. For anyone who has had the desire to float, canoe or kayak down a river, or if you have a particular interest in the Columbia, this is a great read. I love the history of the area traveled and especially enjoyed when the river took over at the Canadian border less than two miles from where I live. It's a great river journey story and I've read as many as I can get my hands on.

Robin's experience of canoeing this great river is written so personally it is a joy to read. Robin has a way with story telling, whether it is fiction or his own memories and journal recollections. Anyone with knowledge of the beautiful Columbia River, as well as the Columbia Gorge, should keep this in their personal library.

the story hits me personally as the Columbia rive is ...
the story hits me personally as the Columbia rive is just across the street from me. Shame how we have killed the river, and the life that it supported.
