Thetford makes an unpleasant task bearable.
I just purchased this two weeks ago. I am glad that I purchased this product. Let me start by saying my home is my trailer and this toilet is used daily. My previous portable toilet was a Fiamma and it was great, but after 5 years it could not contain the smell and would leak. I read the reviews of the product and was hesitant to put out more than a hundred dollars on a portable toilet that may or may not have an electric flush problem. Luckily I did receive one that does flush, but as some reviewers mentioned it may go out. I have only had it two weeks...so far so good. I will update after a couple of months and again in one year. Now for my review of the portable toilet itself. I have to say that the Fiamma I had was good, but this Thetford Curve is better. First, it stands taller than my Fiamma and the Thetford feels like a real toilet. It looks much better with the smooth lines and curve, which is nice for when company comes over and they don't have to encounter a square clunker looking toilet and the uptight people will feel more comfortable sitting on the Thetford Curve. The automatic flush is great. It does the job and does not spray up on the toilet seat like t Fiamma's manual flush would do. I am a overweight person and I am comfortable on this toilet. This toilet feels sturdy. I wouldn't sit on the lid (even if I was skinny) because it really isn't made to be sat on. I have just emptied this for the first time. I don't have the greatest back and because of the way you need to hold it with the weight of the waste it is a little awkward and put a little more strain on my back than the Fiamma toilet did. But that could just take getting use to (maybe). But and this is a big but (no pun intended)...I would take the awkwardness of emptying the Thetford Curve over the Fiamma for one reason and to me a big reason. When emptying the Fiamma, it would splash all over (even outside the bowl no matter how fast or slow I emptied) and would come out like "glop glop" which creates more splash. Very unpleasant. But the Thetford Curve was so much better. The little air vent button worked like a charm. There was no splashing. There was no "glop glop" at all. It was poured out like a pitcher of water. Not one splash outside the bowl. It made an unpleasant task bearable. Even if my electric flush didn't work (which it does), the way this empties out made it worth it. One piece of advice for those who do purchase the Thetford toilet. The little air vent button that I like does have a tiny flaw, but can be avoided. Make sure that you do not fill the waste in your toilet up to full. When you go to empty it and it is completely full, when you push the air vent button the waste liquid may leak out where the button is located. Luckily, I did not have the waste close to being full when I emptied it, but found out this minor flaw after I decided to completely fill it with water on my third rinse of the toilet. So please be aware that this can happen. Still, I would get this Thetford Curve even with that tiny flaw ONE YEAR UPDATE: IT HAS BEEN A YEAR AND IT STILL WORKS GREAT. THE FLUSH STILL WORKS GREAT. NO ISSUES AT ALL. ONE OF THE COMMENTS I MADE ORIGINALLY WAS THAT IT WAS AWKWARD TO EMPTY (ESPECIALLY WITH A BAD BACK). I HAVE NO PROBLEM EMPTYING IT AND IT IS NOT AWKWARD ANYMORE...IT JUST TOOK GETTING USED TO EMPTYING THIS STYLE OVER THE FIAMMA. MATTER OF FACT, I HAVE FOUND THAT EMPTYING THE THETFORD CURVE IS MUCH FASTER THAN MY PREVIOUS FIAMMA AND I WILL SAY IT AGAIN THAT IT DOES NOT CREATE A GLOB GLOB SPLASHING EFFECT. IT IS SMOOTH TO EMPTY, QUICK TO EMPTY AND MAKES A CRAPPY JOB (PUN INTENDED) BEARABLE.

Great product, no issues so far.
We used this to replace the toilet in our camper. Our black tank had a crack in it so rather than replace the tank, and the old toilet that was falling apart, we just went and mounted this one in there and capped off the black tank hole where the old toilet was. The overall feel is almost too light, but that isn't an issue at all when the fresh water tank is filled. Unit is actually more solid than I thought. The height of the unit is great, completely correct for your average adult. Seat is moderately comfortable and I have no complaints about it, and neither has anyone else in our group. Toilet paper holder isn't great as far as placement, but that's more because of the way the toilet is sitting near the wall in the bathroom, but that's not a big deal. It does work though, and is handy if you were going to use it in a more 'portable' application. Since we don't use the camper that much, it only needs to be emptied about once every two weeks to a month. I'd say using some extra treatment chemical is definitely recommended for such long retention periods though, as it helps eliminate odor and ensure things are broken down like they should without unwanted bacteria growth. That said, odor is NOT an issue, the unit keeps a very good seal on the built in holding tank, and I'm pretty sure it smells better than the toilet at my house does usually. One note: Make sure to close the lid before flushing. This prevents any splashing (though I hadn't had this problem personally) and prevents you from getting 'burped on' by the toilet if any pressure has built up in the holding tank. Dumping the tank: Dumping the tank is easier than I thought. I always dump it when it's about 3/4 full, and I can lift it with the built in handles. Pouring it into a residential toilet at the house is an option, though I prefer dumping it in the sewer clean out by the side of the house. This prevents any potential splashing if I mess up from being a problem. People had commented about how horrible the odor was when dumping this. I have not had this problem, provided I use an adequate amount of the treatment chemical for the retention period, as I mentioned before.

Perfect for a pregnant woman while camping
This is my first Porta Potti experience and I am happy I got it! My wife is half way through her pregnancy and it saved her many dark night trips to the public bathroom while camping. This was her second experience with a porta potti and said that this one is the "Gold Standard" of porta pottis. Notes: * Based on other peoples reviews, its possible the frustrated ones didn't read the manual fully. The manual is your friend! * It comes with a small supply of Deodorant/Waste Digestion (enough for 4 complete 5-gallon uses/refills) * The waste cap also doubles as a measuring cup to use for measuring the waste dissolver liquid. * The "Automatic Flush" feature only rinses out the tank, it doesn't open the valve to drop the waste into the holding tank. * To go pee, Close seat, Open waste valve, press rinse button. If doing number 2, press the rinse button once or twice to fill the bowl with a little water, this will help reduce the solids from leaving streaks in the bowl. * Recommend dumping waste in a public outhouse vs at home. This will help reduce possible splash-back in the toilet at home. Pros: * Comes with everything in the box (Except water and toilet paper). It includes batteries, measuring cup, waste digestion/deodorant liquid, toilet paper holder. * Standard toilet height making it feel like one is at home * Cleanup is really straight forward * Comes with a built-in toilet paper holder (works with Charmin "double rolls", but not "mega" rolls * Battery operated water rinse feature - very quiet and effective. * Works great for 5' or 6"3" people Cons: * Unlike a regular toilet, the sitting stance for a tall person is a little awkward since one cannot tuck their feet under the toilet. That being said, the height helps reduce that awkwardness considerably from smaller porta potties. * The "automatic flush" feature should have been called "automatic rinse" since you still have to manually open the waste valve. Conclusion: *Great toilet if you are willing to spend some good money for the "gold standard" of porta potties. Your pregnant wife will love you especially while camping, or even if you have a house and the regular toilet is awkwardly located on the other side of the house. This was purchased with my own money, no discounts other that Amazons decent prices and prime shipping.

Great for plus sized people
I have had this as a bedside toilet for six or seven months straight now. So it gets many uses every day (for number one only not number two, lol). It is nice and tall so you don’t have to sit down very far to use it and the person using it is around 270 pounds and it has held the weight with no problem. In the bottom, I use the lemon disinfectant that Sam’s Club sells, and if it starts to get a little stinky when the trap door is opened, I just add some more to the bottom of the tank.. During the time after all the uses, the batteries have never failed which is nice because originally I wanted the kind with a manual plunger because I saw no reason to have a button to push that was battery operated, but it’s turned out to be OK so far. Tips and design changes: do not let it get too full, or it will leak out all over at the seams. Keep the potti on something waterproof. When you stop hearing the liquid in the upper tank whoosh into the bottom tank, that means that the level in the bottom is very high and you’re either over the limit or very close to overfilling. So be very careful about this by monitoring the front gauge. It’s half green and half red usually at this point, so empty it then when you see this. The slider trap door at the bottom of the toilet that opens and closes is black. I would like very much if they would change this to white because sometimes you need to see the exact color of the urine in the potty and you have no idea what it is when it’s urine sitting on a black surface. The tube that the clean water comes out of when you flush has the water falling very low in the bowl, so since the exiting fresh urine hits up high on the bowl inside, some dries on that surface because the clean water never hits that area so when you empty and clean it, you have to wash the whole inside of the bowl by hand to get the dried urine off of it. I would redesign it so that the water comes out at a much higher level and on the front surface so the urine drops that are on the front inside will get washed down. All it really does now it just add some liquid to the urine which doesn’t serve a lot of purpose. For a number two, it would work fine.

Best Camping toilet in the WORLD!
I am addicted to camping but I'm also crazy about comfort and ambience. Hence, I'm a glamper and this portable potty has got to be the most luxurious item a glamper could have. When it arrived, the box was pretty beat up so I was expecting to find some type of damage to the unit but the packaging was very well thought out. Corners were all reinforced with above average styrofoam and all components were bubble wrapped then rolled in styrofoam and then taped to the inside of the toilet. I felt the packaging needed to be mentioned since it's so rare to see actual thought put into shipping a package these days. Just my opinion. Putting it together was done in less than 10 minutes. Easy peasy. Instruction sheet was very simple and straightforward. No "insert part A into slot B while simultaneously turning Tab C counterclockwise" crap to interpret. Thankfully, assembling a 2 part toilet didn't become an all day ordeal. I'd read lots and lots of reviews on this toilet before I purchased it, so I wanted to make sure everything worked correctly and I didn't have a lemon. At the campsite I set up a pop-up changing room as my bathroom. I decked it all out with battery operated string lights that turn on/off with a remote control (easy to wake up at 3am, push a button and have a lit bathroom at your disposal in the middle of nowhere!), then added the toilet, filled it with water, added the recommended enzyme packets (side note *you will need to purchase these separately, they do not come with the unit*) flushed it to make sure it worked, added a toilet paper stand for convenience and voila, a fantastic bathroom in the middle of nowhere! My friends were thrilled that we had an actual toilet. And it is STILL the talk of our trip lol. Emptying it at a dump station on the way home went ok, and once home I simply used the hose to rinse it out completely. Removing the batteries in the flush mechanism is probably THE most important part to keeping this thing operating smoothly for future use. Other than that, this thing is a game changer for camping!

This portable toilet is a masterpiece.
It’s the height of a normal toilet. The bowl is deep and proportioned like a normal sized toilet. It has a very sturdy feel, and the smooth white plastic makes it feel sanitary. The overall design should win some kind of award, because not only does it look great, it enhances its functionality so that it’s very simple to use and easy to maintain. It has a dignity to it not usually built into porta-pottys. I wouldn’t even call this a porta-potty because in my opinion this is a real toilet. The electric flush is extremely well designed and works perfectly. Even the sound of the flush motor is kind of cool. It does a great job of cleaning the bowl, but I also like to use a soft-bristled toilet brush with it. The seat is minimal but good enough, and the lid is sturdy enough for me to sit on top of like a seat. The guages for the water and sewage tanks don’t work accurately, but it’s easy enough to tell when it’s getting low on water and filling up on sewage. The deodorizing fluid that comes with the toilet works very well. When the slide is open the smell is faint, and when it’s closed there’s no smell whatsoever. The design of the swivel tube makes emptying it at a dumpsite an easy and clean operation. Last but not least, the toilet paper hatch on the side is a very nice space-saving touch, and again, it is very well designed for its level of simplicity. It just works, and it doesn’t feel flimsy or brittle. This toilet is awesome. It works right, and it looks really cool. Five stars. Update: July 2018 - Original batteries are still going strong with regular daily use, and no other issues whatsoever. Easy to keep clean. Wow, this thing is amazing! Update: June 2025 - It’s still working perfectly. The flush motor stopped working a couple of years ago, so I just use a brush & pour a little water from a pitcher. No leaks, no broken mechanical parts. Amazing!

It's Awesome, Before it Breaks!
My first one star review, but as you might agree after reading, it seems warranted. I purchased the Thetford Curve for our small camper in May 2013. We camped throughout the Sierras that year but, crucially, never used the Curve as we traveled with family who had a motorhome. Thus, the Curve sat anchored to the floor plate without batteries or water and was never used. In July 2014 I finally filled the Curve with fresh water, put in the six supplied AA batteries, and the prescribed amount of deodorizer in the bottom tank. It worked flawlessly and was indispensable for a man traveling with 5 and 2 1/2 year old girls. It performed without incident as we traveled from SoCal to Dinosaur National Monument and all over in between. I emptied the tank and refilled with fresh water as needed, and it was great. The trip lasted a week and after getting home, left within a week to go to Oceano Dunes where, again, the toilet was great. Got home and cleaned the tank really well, kept water in the fresh tank and it was ready to go. In April 2015 I fixed the toilet plumbing in our one bedroom house and the project went over a day. The Curve was brought in and put in the bathroom. Tried the button for the bowl water fill… nothing. Not a noise. Opened and replaced batteries. One of the Thetford supplied batteries had discolored, but there was no leakage or corrosion. Reassembled, nothing. Removed the battery pack and tested at the contacts, 9.2 volts right where it should have been on the circuit board. Tested the contacts at the connection to the pump, 9.2v for 1-2 seconds when the button was depressed (the amount of time the pump actuates to fill the bowl with a bit of water). Reassembled - nothing. Removed the pump assembly. It looks factory new with no deposits, no mineral stains, no corrosion and the impeller spins freely. It makes no sound whatsoever when the button is depressed. Reassembled and contacted Thetford. They replied quickly and informed me of the one year warranty. I explained the situation and as one would expect, it was too far out of warranty for free service. I didn't push the issue because I understand there is no way for them (or for you) to know whether or not I’m being honest. So I figured, “Meh, I’ll pay $30 for a replacement pump, not a big deal.” And here’s where the absurdity of the modern world comes in. How much might one expect the pump assembly for a $140 porta potty cost? $30? $40 $50? No no no, you think so small… $132.48 One Hundred Thirty Two Dollars and Forty Eight Cents. For a toilet that I can buy new for $140 on Amazon. So take this review for what it’s worth. You’re paying for a toilet that has no manual backup pressure system that, in my case, lasted a total of maybe 8 months and maybe 60 pump cycles and was kept indoors, clean, and cleaned out. Granted, I stored it with some water in the freshwater tank which is a no-no, but still, a complete and total failure after roughly 10 days total of usage? Maybe I’m just old fashioned, but it seems a bit wasteful to me. So consider a pressure system maybe? Something that will not rely on a microprocessor or batteries? Or end up like me, with a $140 piece of plastic and a wife and two daughters who you now have to send off to a dark pit toilet at night when camping. Caveat Emptor!

Be a Happy Crapper with this Toilet
Great little crapper. I was considering a very pricey ($950) composting toilet for my cabin, but after some research I landed on this thing. So the idea of saving over $800 was a risk I was willing to take. Two adults (male & female) use thing thing daily (although I generally take my leaks outside) and I have to empty it about once per week. Emptying it is much easier than you think. I use the recommended Aqua-Kem, which deodorizes and breaks down the waste into a liquid form. When you empty it, you just rotate the "exit chute" and everything flows smoothly into your waste container. I empty mine in a regular toilet over at the main residence. Except for the most recent waste, 95% of the content is in liquid form. Just hold your nose and pull your shirt up over your mouth and let the waste waterfall begin. It takes about 30 seconds for everything to flow out. The real-water flush option is pretty rad. Often times, toilet paper will stick to the toilet (along with waste splatter), so you usually have to hit the flush button more than once. We keep a roll of paper towels in the bathroom cabinet for those times when waste gets sticky on the bowl. Just wipe it out and toss the paper towel into the trash. Or you can use TP to wipe the bowl and toss it into the crapper. But you want to avoid putting extra elements into the crapper if you can, so you don't have to empty it as often. As long as you use the deo, there's no foul smell. And remember to close the chute when you're not actually sitting on it. As it gets full, there's a bit of a smell when the chute is open ... but nothing you wouldn't expect. The dimensions are good. I'm 5 ft 10 inches and weigh 175 lbs, and my girlfriend is like 5 ft and 105 lbs. We both agree that it feels like a "normal" toilet when we're sitting on it. I refill the toilet using my hand-held shower. It separates into two elements (top part holds the water ... bottom part holds the waste), so I just tote the top portion over to my shower and fill it on up with water. I've been using this daily for nearly 3 months and the original battery is still going strong.

Great RV cassette toilet.
We recently bought this to upgrade from the smaller Camp toilet. This is soooo much better then those small square camp models. First off it's the height of a normal toilet so so don't feel like you're sitting on a kids toy with your knees around your chin. Second, the depth of the bowl is deep. The built in battery operated flush pump helps with clearing the bowl. Third, emptying the bowl with the side lever is very user friendly and smoth action. And final is the nasty task of emptying the holding tank. With its long tube and swivel action and the built in notch on the bottom of the tank it makes holding it and emptying it into a regular toilet very easy. The fluid level gauges for the water and waste tanks are a great feature. With its 5gl capacity for each the flush water and waste tank you have lots of capacity. These are great option for anyone building out a van.

Meilleure toilette portable pour chalet, bateau, en cas d'urgence
Utilisation depuis 1 an au chalet l'hiver. Efficace. Excellent produit.

Nice seat height
First time filling it and emptying it, wasnt the best experience. The pipe to move it and empty it is nice, but was gurgling and splashing because of the angle. The smell isnt really reduced but it is a nice toilet and sits at a proper height (we couldnt find one that wasnt TINY) so I am happy about that.
