THE LAYOUT Darrel spends these first two classes walking you through the layout process using his straightedge and divider method. This versatile method allows you to transfer what you see on your reference to your drawing paper with pinpoint accuracy! DEFINING THE FACIAL STRUCTURE It’s time to lighten up your layout lines and start the 5-Pencil Method layering process. Follow Darrel’s lead as he determines the darkest portions of the horse and begins to define the shadows—the first step toward life-giving contour. REFINING THE HAIR you’ll see the hair evolve from stark and coarse to silky and smooth! Discover how to fill in gaps, spread excess graphite with a soft brush, and create the illusion of contour by varying the intensity of your strokes! You’ll turn to these skills over and over again, regardless of your future subjects. SHAPING THE FOREHEAD & MUZZLE Discover Darrel’s tricks for maximizing the illusions of depth and dimension in the muzzle and nostrils. You’ll also see how he uses some subtle techniques to show the constant but gradual contour of Burdock’s head—a must-have if you want the most realistic outcome possible. ENHANCING THE MANE You’ll focus your energy and hair-drawing skills on enhancing the rough outline of the mane to create organic, flowing locks of hair that are every bit as wild and free as the rest of this beautiful horse. FINISHING TOUCHES The final class takes you one last time over the entire portrait for the chance to fill in gaps, balance values, and ensure that you’re getting the most out of your highlights. Then, as the crowning achievement, Darrel shares his tips for cleaning up and signing your work of art. Now that you’ve created a portrait to be proud of, go show it off!
