*Scroll to bottom for 9 year update!* Purchased five of these four years ago, during winter 2011. My wife and I live in NYC, the apartment we lived in at the time had issues with the heating system. The landlord and I worked out a deal so I may purchase these and he'd cover the expenses (I get to keep them), including the difference on the electric bill. We lived in a large second floor four bedroom apartment. The heat emitted from these are wonderful and the automatic setting keeps each room you have one in extremely comfortable. After having moved from the apartment gave 2 back to the landlord which, he left in the apartment for the next tenants (new tenants are friends of mine and love the heaters). In my new apartment I still use one of the three heaters in addition to the apartments heating system to keep it comfortable at all times. Lent one to a friend of my wife's who's heating went out while landlord was away for a few days and she loved it - preferred it over the regular heating system. She asked if she may keep it for longer and kept it for a few months until she decided to purchase one. You may use one in a large room and it works extremely well. In our previous apartment the master bedroom was huge. It was big enough to fit a queen size bed (could've easily fit a king), with entire bedroom set, two large wardrobe closets, a long full-size sofabed, desk with chair, and a chest of drawers - no it didn't look crowded and yes still had plenty space to spare - yes it really was in NYC. Four years of use and the heaters still work just as well as the first day. Extremely energy efficient, doesn't make a big difference on the electric bill. We keep it on the automatic temperature setting so it turns on once it reaches below a specific setting. Even when it stays on for long periods of time doesn't make much of a dent on the electric bill. 9 Year Update: My original review was written in 2015 (4 years after purchasing), this was my first winter in current apartment. After writing the review we decided to stop using the apartments heating system and fully switch back to using these heaters as we did in our previous apartment. The apartment uses steam radiators (just like previous apartment) and we originally figured it would work out using it here better than in our previous apartment. It did heat the apartment much better than the previous one, however it heated the apartment a bit too much. The amount of steam and heat even if turned down extremely low, was unbearable - plus it would randomly start emitting a loud banging noise (like someone hammering on the metal pipes within the walls) every so often which was extremely annoying especially in the middle of the night. We decided to turn the steam radiators completely off and started strictly using the Lasko heaters again. Two winters later, in 2017 two of the three heaters died out and completely stopped working in the beginning of winter - they lasted 7 long years without weakening or any other issues. We replaced them with two of the same exact heaters. The third heater is now 9 years old and it worked just as well as the two newer heaters during the last two winters (remainder of 2017 and all of 2018). We did purchase a Dyson fan/heater in summer of 2017 and then again in summer of 2018, as well as a small tabletop Lasko heater (also an extremely amazing heater by Lasko) which we placed on the bathroom windowsill. We do now also use them in addition to the three Lasko heaters, but only purchased them because we wanted to have the ability to keep the three Lasko heaters at significantly lower settings while still maintaining the desired apartment temperature. Since we also wanted to add fans for warmer weather, we decided it made sense to purchase all in one device's to not have to have two fans plus two extra heaters as we don't have much space for storage. While we also like the Dyson devices, the Lasko heaters by far outperform the heat from the Dyson devices. The Dyson devices do have the pros of being cool to the touch and children cannot burn themselves with it, plus it has a wide angle setting which emits the heat for a whole section as opposed to only being directional. Either way, the Lasko heaters heat a room while only being directional and obviously last without losing strength for years to come. The Dyson devices seem to lose strength after continuous days of use and need to be powered off for a few hours every once in a while, and the first one purchased had completely stopped emitting heat on the fourth or fifth month of use. It may have been defective as once replaced neither of the two Dysons stopped emitting heat and hopefully last as well as the Lasko heaters - especially since they are by far significantly more expensive. Hope the original review and this update help others who are looking to make a decision on whether or not it's worth the purchase. Fyi, my friends (mentioned in original review) still have the ones we left for them in our previous apartment and they are also still going strong - which means 2 devices lasted 7 years, and then 9 years and 9 NY winters later the other 3 are still going strong. For less than $80 - you seriously can't go wrong!

UPDATE (January 2014): Temperatures dropped significantly around the end of November 2013, I pulled these out again and set them up. They do work wonderfully, when used together. I believe that the biggest issue with warming my apartment (without assistance from my furnace) is the windows because they're drafty and I do not have curtains up, just blinds. So, with drafty windows and living in a ground level apartment (the window sills are level to the ground), it requires both heaters being set up and ran together--though expensive in electricity, it's still cheaper than my gas furnace. They keep the living room at a decent 70*F and when moved to the bedroom, 70-74*F. ORIGINAL REVIEW (March 2013): I just received the two I ordered today. I plugged one in to see how well it heated our apartment, which is 760 square feet. I was very surprised that I had our central heat set to 70*F and the one heater brought the temperature up to 72-74*F (This was with the bedroom/bathroom doors shut, so approximately 720sqft). I had to leave for a short while so I set the central heat to 60*F and set up both heaters. When I came back the temperature was still ~74*F with both heaters going. The plugs in the outlets did not get hot, did not overheat and did not melt anything, as other posters had reviewed. I had to call my apartment maintenance to fix one outlet which was loose due to a crack which was NOT caused by either heater, but had been there since we moved in last week--other than that, the heaters are working fabulously. I was very surprised that neither heater has the usual ceramic heating smell that the smaller ceramic heaters I have bought, have had. In fact, neither heater smells, at all. The remotes are pretty nifty, but I don't think I will get much use out of them, I'm too lazy to go buy AAA batteries! There is a beep, but to me it is not loud enough to wake a person, I mean unless you're consistently pushing buttons for 5 minutes straight. I really like that these ceramic heaters warmed up our apartment so well, in such a short time! The difference between these heaters and the electric-radiator heaters I bought from Target on clearance is so vast, it's not even funny! I had bought two of those radiator heaters, closed all the doors, set them up and ran them on full blast all night. What was the end result come morning? Cold. Thankfully, I was able to return those heaters and after getting home, I immediately purchased these ceramic heaters. I could not be happier, to be quite honest. (Although, this review is based solely on my experience with these heaters since receiving them about 12 hours ago! I'll update after sufficient use, though.) I wanted to add that it really concerns me that a few reviewers (and probably even readers of these reviews) plug space heaters into extension cords and/or surge protectors. #1. It is very dangerous, as it is an electrical fire hazard, to plug a space heater into either (or both) an extension cord or surge protector. The reason they make the cords short, even for small kitchen appliances like toasters, is to prevent electrical fires and the entanglement of the cords around a person's neck--especially a child's neck.

Solid heater and I know Lasko is supposedly a known name for space heaters so I thought I'd give this one a try. I actually purchased about 8 different space heaters to evaluate which one I would keep and this is one of the two that I did keep. I'm using this to heat my daughters room at night rather than heating the whole house. Here's my pros vs cons breakdown for this. Pros: 1. Heats well 2. Remote 3. Well built 4.Platic front doesn't get too hot 5. Displays the ambient temperature (many don't do this, which I find annoying since it leaves you unaware of what the progress of the heating) 6. Rotates as an option. Cons: 1. The handle doesn't have a lip to catch your finger, so the handle is nearly worthless for one-handed carrying since it's very hard to have a proper grip. 2. There is no way to dim or turn off the screen. This can be annoying if this is used in a bedroom. I really don't understand how any consumer electronics do not consider this. 3. The fan is louder than I thought. I can't use this in my office since I find it too loud for when I have phone calls, etc., but it's okay for using in my daughter's room since her sound machine is louder than this anyway. The heater we had in her room was much quiter so I now use that in my office. Note: of the 8 units I bought, the fan noise was similar or louder. I'm not sure why my older heater is so much more quiet. Unfortunately, I can't find that one available for sale anymore...rats!! 4. The angle of the screen faces up, so you can't read it while sitting or laying down. Not a dealbreaker by any means, and perhaps it was designed to be read while standing, and may be more advantagous while doing so. With that said, this is a solid heater and the price was very comparable to many of the scores of non-branded units available here on Amazon. I'd recomend it as a solid buy unless one of the cons listed about is a dealbreaker for you.

These heaters are excellent. I own 2 and I’m buying a 3rd. I bought them on Amazon over a year ago and use them daily in the winter (Nov-March). We live in Vermont and primarily heat with wood and wood pellets. There are a few areas that the wood heat has a hard time reaching in our house so I bought these to supplement. We use one in our bedroom and one in our toddler’s room. They heat up quickly, warm larger rooms well, and the thermostat, timer, etc work as advertised. I saw a review that complained about the unit reaching 77 when set to 73. The manual clearly states that the thermostat allows the temp to rise 4 degrees above the set temp before shutting off. It then kicks back on when it reads 1 degree below set temp. This gives the unit time to cool down while the room temp gradually (or not so gradually in an old house like ours) drops back to the set temp. Otherwise this thing would just keep running and be turning on and off way more frequently if there’s only a 2 degree temp range. This isn’t your home furnace…it’s a small space heater with a reasonably accurate and reliable thermostat. Also keep in mind it sits down low so the temp it reads may differs slightly from the temp read by a thermometer higher up in the room. I have accurate analog thermometers in every room to monitor heat distribution and can say these units are consistent and register the same temp drops and elevations that my room thermometers do. They’re usually reading a few degrees cooler than my thermometers which I expect since they’re low and on a cold floor. As far as safety goes, we’ve had zero issues with overheating or any issues I’ve seen in other reviews. With a mix of newer and older wiring we’ve had no issues whatsoever. We have these running all night nearly every night from November to March and during extra cold days we move them around if we’re home and cold. When running they are warm but not dangerously hot to the touch. Even the front grill can be touched without burning when operating on high output after a running a while. My toddler does not mess with it but has accidentally knocked it over and picked it back up safely by himself while it’s running. Likewise my dog likes to lay near it and has run into it without injuring himself. These heaters have not led to a major energy cost increase. In summary, I highly recommend these. Like I said, was back on this page over a year later to buy another one because they’re that good. I’ve used a number of alternatives and none has matched the heat output, energy cost, or safety these have provided so until I have an issue I’ll stick with them. I will update this review if anything changes.

I bought one of these last year to put in my bedroom because I live on a three-floor townhome and the termostat is on the second floor. My bedroom is very large and the little heater did a great job warming it up. So I decided to get a couple more heaters, one for the guest bedroom and one for my basement office. They did such a great job and made my energy bill so much lower that I brought the guest room heater to the living room and turned off the central heat. This year, I went to a store and saw them at a lower price, so I went ahead and bought another one to put back in the guest bedroom. They are really great because not only do they have remote controls, but they also have an auto setting, so you can program the temperature you want and just leave it on. Programming is as easy as pushing a button to set it higher or another one to set it lower, and the heater thermostat makes sure the room stays at about the temperature you set. This product is so good that two of my friends went ahead and bought some for their houses after they came over and I told them about how happy I am with them! Here are my thoughts on this product: PROS - light and easy to carry around if you want to move it from one room to another - durable, the ones I bought a year ago work as great as they did when I bought them - convenient and easy to use remote control - easy to use digital control on the unit - automatic temperature setting - heats up the space quickly, even larger rooms - does not use much electricity - nice design, easy on the eyes - cheap and small enough that you can get one for each room of your place - for multi-floored homes, if working with central heaters it will help level the heat throughout the place CONS - after thinking a lot, I realized that the only con is that you have to be careful where you store the remote control during the summer. I had put the ones that are in rooms where there are drawers in the drawers, but can't remember where I put the remote for the unit in my living room. So, if you purchase this during the cold months, come up with a system for storing the remotes at a place you will remember by the time it gets cold again next year. UPDATE: When the temperature gets really low outside (teens through low 20th's) I do turn on my central heater to help with the larger area of my place (living and dining rooms that are open together). So, if you live in a colder region and have larger areas with big windows or sliding doors, one of these heaters may not be enough to keep such areas toasty. Although, if it is a larger area that has heavy curtains helping insulate it, etc, then it may be all you need (ie: my bedroom is 15 x 12 and this little heater handles all that is needed to keep the room warm, and the finished part of my basement that has only a window--not a large glass sliding door like the living room-- can also be kept really nice and warm with just one of these heaters running in it). This is a great heater to heat a room or basement. We have a living room on ground floor on the north side of the house with few furnace vents. It can get down to low 50's in the room if it is below freezing outside. This heater brings the temperature up to mid 60's in a matter of 10-15 minutes. The heat output is strong the minute you turn it on, and the fan is strong for its size but nice and quiet. I cannot tell the difference in heat output on low vs. high setting. The high setting simply pulls more energy/more heat...the fan does not blow faster on high. I find Low to be adequate to heat our room. The most under-rated feature is the large onscreen readout of the room temperature, so you can see the effectiveness of the heater, as the temperature readout creeps up while it heats the room! Another great feature is the "Auto" feature which allows you to set a desired temperature. Simple +/- buttons to set the temp, it flashes a few times and done, it will turn off a few degrees above set temp, and then turn on again 1 degree below set temp, so it minimizes the times it turns on and off by giving a 3 degree spread around your set temperature. The only downside is the "Auto" temperature setting can only be used on "high" heat. you cannot use the auto feature on "LOW." So if you use LOW, it will simply run all the time until you turn it off. The oscillation is very nice and covers a wide swath. The remote is very simple and very handy. The readout on the heater is large, and it uses different colors so you can tell if it is on high or low for a distance...low has a yellow light, high has a red light. This makes the remote useful as you don't have to walk up to it after you turn it on to see what setting it is on. Lastly, it is actually attractive. Most space heaters are ugly and look like something out of a 1980's basement. This is narrow, lightweight, and very modern looking. It also has a cutaway space out of the back to grab it and lift it...so there is a handle. I did not experience any "plastic" smell when we first turned it on (like other posters have noticed). The only trouble we had was we blew a breaker when someone tried to use a hairdryer on the same circuit we had the heater plugged into, which is not the heater's fault! I would highly recommend. Best space heater I have ever owned.

This product is a HAZARD. I don't understand how Amazon can still sell it with a 4 star rating when the one-star ratings are so severe, which has to be taken into account. Amazon, please discontinue your association with this dangerous product. Sure there are a lot of people who aren't having a problem with it but those of us who are have been in danger of having our houses burnt down. That's a BIG deal. Two nights ago I woke up to a hideous noise and a powerful electrical stench. I took a video of it. The machine was overheating and making this awful sound. It's supposed to have automatic overheat protection and a heat shutoff device, but obviously the electronics were fried and it was not turning off. If I hadn't been there it would have burned the house down. As it was, it took two days to get the electrical burning smell out of the house and I'm just lucky it didn't burn my house down and me in my bed. This isn't even the first fire hazard with the product. After I bought it, it seemed to work OK for a while though the heat would sometimes crank way up, which at first I thought was due to user error (pushing the wrong button on the remote at night or something). One day the battery-operated remote MELTED overnight without warning. It burned so badly that the plastic keys were deformed and rough to the touch and the whole thing caved in and distorted slightly. Smelt awful too, which was my only warning. I decided I didn't need a remote to operate it but it should have been a clue that their engineering parameters were shoddy. To boot, around that same time I confirmed that it was impossible to consistently regulate the temperature, and that it wasn't user error. The thermostat only operates at the high heat setting. It's awful design — never have I seen a product so prettily designed on the exterior and so carelessly built. Here's how it works (I've included a pic of the section of the manual that I stared at each night to make sure I was doing it correctly.) To set the room to a particular temperature you're supposed to go to the High Heat setting, press the + or - button till you reach the desired temp, and the display will show an A in a circle and the desired temperature will flash for a moment before resuming the display of the ambient temperature. It's a bit complicated and not at ALL intuitive so at first I kept thinking it was user error or that their manual documentation had missed a step. Alas no. Sometimes you set it correctly and it cranks the heat up, usually capping around 88 degrees even though I had it set at 73. Really unpleasant, and it's not just me as I've now confirmed by asking questions and reading other comments in this thread, which I should have done first.

The item arrived late and with an American plug, rendering it useless without an adaptor. This, coupled with all the reports here of fire danger makes me reluctant to have this thing plugged in for any lengthy spell, much less with an extra hazzard of an adapter. Whether it heats a room or not, I cannot say; but I'm not willing to take the risk – it's being returned.

This Lasko heater works great. Have had it for 2 yrs, zero problems, and it can get as hot as you want. Great product. Lasko is known for being bulletproof and great quality.

Me gustó mucho este calentador, es silencioso, de buen tamaño, adicional a indicar los grados de temperatura que deseo me permite elegir la potencia (alta o baja) mis mascotas ni siquiera se acercan a él y me gusta mucho que si lo programo para una temperatura específica si la respeta y mientras está la habitación caliente el calentador se queda en standby. Lo uso para calentar una habitación de aproximadamente 20 m2 y funciona excelente.
