Borges' complete poetry
This probably is as complete a collection of his poetry as we are going to get, from the 1920s to the 80s. There is no general introduction or commentary by a third party; it is all 100% Borges; but each of the 12 poetry books represented has a brief prologue written by him (in 1969 or in the 80s). These prologues are delightful "conversations" with JLB; often they are not totally pertinent to the poetry that is to follow, but he always manages to say something interesting. This is not a bilingual edition. If you are not familiar with Buenos Aires, and especially when dealing with his poetry before 1930, look up some old images of the city. Do not be satisfied with the conventional translation of words like "zaguán", "patio", "parra", "aljibe", "almacén", "guapo", "barrio" is close enough to "neighborhood"; but "arrabal" is not "suburb", as we think of it today. In the 1920, B. Aires was a city growing at full speed, perhaps like N. York in the second half of the 1800s. You may benefit from looking for Images of these words that have a very pronounced local flavor. His later poetry is not so tied to local elements. JLB's poetry is very sophisticated, but not opaque; mostly it is actually quite straightforward. On occasion he may reference some historical or literary character whose relevance can quickly be ascertained these days of Google searches. In any case, if just a few of the several hundred poems in this book resonate with you, that will be well worth the modest price.

The poetry is the soul of his work - and I was the lucky one who discovered in Amazon's list this book: - more than six hundred pages of genial poems!!! Complete! And for a reasonable price and a lovely size. Well printed ! A todos los que hablan el espanol, digo que non pierdam aquel que es considerado uno de los escritores más influentes del siglo XX!
