Maria's Low Protein Cook Book

For everyone who ever wondered what's for dinner and if it is low protein.
The dedication, For everyone who ever wondered what's for dinner and if it is low protein, says it all. This cookbook has a personality that will pervade the low protein cook's kitchen, while simultaneously transforming the low protein eater (s) in the family. It is beautifully written and illustrated with professional food photos. The uniform easy-to-follow concise one page instruction for each recipe is clear and concise. Tips provide the personality with a positive fun spin such as, "This dessert defies gravity...the cherry sauce will sink to the bottom...It tastes great no matter where the sauce is located." All of the recipes use healthy, wholesome ingredients, and none of them expect an unrealistic amount of time or effort on the part of the cook. Each recipe is interesting, creative, and unique--dishes a low protein cook would not imagine. I would highly recommend this cookbook to all families who have at least one eater on a medically supervised low protein diet and I would also encourage purchaser's to read the book cover-to-cover. Be sure not to miss Bailey's low protein rice porridge (made with real Bailey's liquor). Any eater exposed to this set of dishes will become more adventurous in their food choices and will most likely want to get involved in food prepartion. This cookbook revolutionizes the traditional boundaries and limitations of the medically necessary low protein diet by utilizing other ingredients than protein, thereby resulting in surprisingly appealing dishes. To really appreciate this bold move, one would have to review and use other low protein cookbooks. The difference is truly innovative. This book is a valuable contribution to low protein cookery for persons on medically supervised low protein diets.

A review based off first read through of book
I will admit, I just got this book in the mail. I have not tried any of the recipes yet. But in case some folks would like some additional detail of the cookbook, I thought I would provide it. The colored photos are really nice. There are some fun and inventive recipes in here, as well as some basic ones that are naturally low in protein and may already be part of your low protein recipe collection. Many of the recipes call for a Loprofin baking mix, and some of the desserts call for Milupa LP drink powder. I was a little disappointed in how some of the ingredient amounts were vague, such as “medium potato” or “large onion”, as well as how there wasn’t a description for weight or size of portions, or brands listed for some items (such as Low Protein Cheese Shreds) which could greatly effect the Phe/protein content of the recipe. But with a little calculating (which all of use who measure Phe are very used to by now) a very accurate phe content can be easily attained. Each recipe includes calorie count, protein and phe content for the entire Recipe as well as each portion. All in all, I wouldn’t recommend this book as someone’s FIRST low protein cookbook, since extra calculations and recipe weighing/measuring may be required to get very specific phe measurements, but this cookbook would be a helpful addition to your recipe collection if you are already used to calculating/cooking low phe recipes. I personally am looking forward to trying out the Carrot and Apple soup, the White Mushroom Sauce (to pour over pasta), and the Roasted Stuffed Eggplant. I cook for my toddler son, who has PKU, and am always looking for recipes we can eat as a family. Pictures of the table of content is included with this review.

Disappointing
This recipe book is very small and honestly not very helpful.

Not PKU friendly. Recipes have high Phe content
This is a lovely cookbook for someone looking for low protein recipes. If you are looking for low PHE content for anyone with PKU this cookbook is not that helpful.I do love how she has the protein and phenylalanine content shown for both the entire recipe and indivdual portions.
