I noticed that some of my competitors, particularly the Eastern Europeans, stated that they utililized kettlebells as part of their training. I know that kettlebell training has been used widely for many years in Russia and Eastern Europe for athletics and fitness, as well as an athletic completion in itself. I also know that kettlebells are becoming a popular fitness and sports training method in North America. The advantages of kettlebells are numerous: they are compact and portable, and they can provide cardio, strength, explosiveness, mobility and flexibility benefits all in the same workout. It was with great interest, then, that I reviewed The Great Kettlebell DVD by James Talo.I was impressed by the fact that James Talo is certified by both the AKC (American Kettlebell Club) and the RKC (Russian Kettlebell Club). Who knows about kettlebells better than the Russians! James begins the DVD with an introduction when he talks about the benefits of kettlebells and how to approach kettlebell exercise. Next, he clearly demonstrates the basics of properly and efficiently using the kettlebell: stance and keeping the core stabilized, hip control, gripping and handling the kettlebell and using the kettlebell when lying down.Next is a series of kettlebell exercises, all clearly demonstrated by James or a fitness model and all with an easy-to-follow spoken instructions by James. Each exercise is broken down into easy, intermediate and advanced movements, starting with the easy and, step-by-step, progressing to the advanced. The demonstrations and instructions are presented so you can work along with them in real time, or even repeat them if you would like. This comprehensive series of kettlebell exercises can work the entire body and be done in a small space and in a short time with a single kettlebell as the only equipment needed. That s an efficient workout!I recommend this DVD to not only the beginner who wants to learn how to use kettlebells safely, properly and efficiently but also to the experienced user who wants to better use kettlebells to achieve their training goals. Instructional DVD
There are two types of kettlebell dvds, workout and instructional. A workout dvd is one where the viewer exercises with the presenter. An instructional dvd is one where the viewer learns facts, such as proper form and other useful advice, from the presenter.The Great Kettlebell DVD is an instructional dvd. The presenters will show you the proper form for each exercise, advice on the size of the kettlebell, etc. It will be up to the viewer to create his/her own exercise workout.I liked the main presenter, James Talo, but found him to be slightly boring and he spoke in a monotone; some personality or humor would have helped. I also would have like the camera to be closer to the subject. For those with small tv sets, seeing the presenter's actions was hard to make out.I do recommend this dvd for the proper way to exercise with a kettlebell. For beginner's workout dvds, I recommend Absolute Beginners Fitness: 3 in 1 Kettlebell Amy Bento - Recommended by Prevention Magazine (kettle bell) , Kettlebells The Iron Core Way Volume 1 (Complete Guide to Kettlebell Training with Follow Along Workout) (along with Volumes 2 and 3), and The Kettlebell Goddess Workout: How to Achieve and Maintain a Divine Body with the World's Most Effective Tool for Weight Loss, Strength, Endurance and Flexibility .
