Review: Great read that I would highly recommend! - Mary Abbajay hit a home run with this book. It is timely and something that even after being in the workforce for 20 years I can use today. The book is written in a format that is easy to read and shows just how much passion she has in each line. Each chapter covers new material and gives actionable steps to take to make you happier at work. Managing Up isn’t about “waiting for the unicorn, it’s about succeeding with the boss you actually have.” Really helped me take personal accountability by starting to improve my relationship and determining my long-term career trajectory. Great read that I would highly recommend! Review: Solid Management Book - I enjoyed this book and appreciated the specific case studies and action plans. I made it my leadership development book for the year. My boss isn't terrible. Although I'm new to working with a remote leader. I adopted a version of the update email and it's improved my working relationship with my remote boss and helped me stay accountable to my goals.

A must book
Managing up/Mary Abbajay Maybe I was wrong when I turned to reading travel books. I didn't get answers to my questions in them, most of the heroes traveled, walked, searched. Few of them found answers to the questions they had at the beginning of the journey or solutions to the problems that caused them to embark on it. In a journey book, who should be satisfied with the answers: the hero or the reader? Managing up (hereinafter: "Man Up"), is not a travel book, it is a book that deals with organizational culture, with our behavior as people in the organization. How can we be better workers? Not managers, employees and why should we improve. The author of the book presents at the beginning her answer to the question of whether man is basically good or bad. A beautiful and logical answer from which it goes to remove objections to change. Man Up is not satisfied with describing types of managers and what they need, he understands me, the reader and the effort required of me to adapt myself to my manager. And so I found myself in a journey book that I didn't plan to embark on: my guarding of who I am in front of the person and the needs of the person standing in front of me. Equally the manager can be a co-worker, a friend, a relative, a family member, someone with whom one has a relationship. It's been a long time since I've read a book that points out my failures in a row. You were wrong here, and what did you do there? Whole pages that while reading I discovered how many mistakes I made, mistakes that some of them can be corrected and those that are already too late. Cases I could have handled differently and wisely if I knew how. A book about past, present and future. Our ability to forgive ourselves, keep who we are and move forward by choice, knowing that work will be required of us. A book that the saleswoman at the bookstore wouldn't present as awareness or personal growth, even though that's exactly what it does. have fun

An Excellent Guide for Everyone in the Workplace (Plus a Fun Read!)
This book is a game changer for my career! I've read tons of leadership books, but this is the first one to help me understand how to work better with those above me and around me in my organization. The annoying quirks and complaints I have about my boss I now see in a new light as personality style and workplace preferences. There are even chapters on difficult bosses and one that so accurately described my "Ghost" boss! I still don't love my boss, but now I feel like I can better understand and adapt to ultimately benefit my own career and help improve my other relationships at work. If you have a boss, it's definitely worth a read!

Easy read
This is a few blog posts and not a book. Definitely worth a quick read to understand what kind of a boss you have. In my case it also helped me understand and evaluate what kind of a boss am I.

very helpful, practical advice can be used immediately
Mary Abbajay outlines a number of different types of management styles, many of which can be difficult to work under. She then provides practical immediate advice to understanding the behaviors and their motivations as well as how to handle them in many situations. The advice is bolstered by brief real-life examples that come from her consulting and workshops. I found myself highlighting many passages, so that I can improve how I respond should any of these scenarios come up in the future. As a relatively new manager, I also found it to be helpful to consider how my own actions may be perceived to those that report to me. I thoroughly recommend this book to add to the canon of professional life that also includes What Color Is My Parachute and Highly Effective Networking. Whereas those books will help you to find a dream career or job, this book will help you keep it and make it manageable even if the boss is more of a nightmare. Also, Mary Abbajay provides solid advice for recognizing if and when it may not advantageous to stay - and how to extricate oneself should that be necessary. Valuable indeed!

good for tactical skills and steps for Managing Up.
Good little book for practical steps to figure out how to manage up, especially if you’re new to the workforce or struggle with interpersonal dynamics. The first part is a re-named exploration of the Insights professional personality tool, but the practical steps are helpful.

Great advice on managing your manager!
There are lots of books on how to lead or manage but not much great insight on managing your manager. Mary Abbajay’s great new book ‘Managing Up’ shares solid advice for taking ownership over your own career. No more complaining about the boss because now you can manage the boss! Most importantly the book ends with a chapter appropriately titled ‘It’s Okay to Quit’! And it is! Take ownership over making change happen in your organization however if nothing changes, move on. Life is too short and you can take your value and passion elsewhere. Before any of that though, get a copy of the book, read the advice and put it to use!
