will this work in sewing machines?

Yes, it does. I use it on my Brother PQ 1500sl. You will need to increase the tension because it is thicker than regular thread. I use a size 18 Schmetz leather needle or the Hlx5 needle recommended for my machine.

I compared this thread with small industrial spools and the closest match would be a 69 (tex70) .009 by dial caliper. Similar to jeans, jacket or vehicle upholstery thread. Most home machines should be able to handle this with the right needle. Works perfect for hand stitched repairs.

Would this be good thread to use for backpack repair? I carry a lot of books with me.

Yes it definitely would be.I used it to repair my sofa which gets a lot of use.The sofa material will give way before the the thread does.
