Midnight and the Meaning of Love (The Midnight Series Book 2)

Independent from "The Coldest Winter Ever"
I'm not going to provide a synopsis as that has been repeatedly done by other reviewers. Rather this review will be a reflection my opinion and reaction to this tale.Check your expectations at the door and you won't be disappointed. This tale does not get you closer to the Midnight of "The Coldest Winter Ever". This story is definitely part 2 of "Midnight, A Gangster Love Story". It focuses on what feels like minute details and tangents causing the excited reader to grow restless and disinterested, tempted to skip pages to escape the unnecessary dribble. It's obvious that there needs to be another Midnight book. However, if you shed your expectations, this will prove to be a remarkable read. This is a palpable excursion into Japanese and Korean lands with a story loosely woven in. At least this book attempted to tone down the constant insults displayed in the first book, of "Midnight, A Gangster Love Story". Midnight was less judgmental regarding African Americans this go round. But this book left me with a lot of unanswered questions, like the first book: If Midnight must build separate quarters for his wives, why is his mother still in the U.S. Why isn't she in Sudan with her precious love, Midnight's father? If a man must be willing to die to protect his families, why isn't Midnight's father with them?Midnight can't be with Bangs because his mother is not accepting of her because she has a child conceived as a result of her molestation by her uncle who continues his torment in this book as well. Well, I guess we learn where Midnight got his judgmental nature. But with all that being said it is definitely memorable. It stands in a class of its own. I read countless books; three books a week. I actually read the book days after the release because I pre-ordered it. I started this review but like other reviewers I was so mad; I stopped writing my review and put it aside thinking I needed more time to be fair to the book. Often I can't even remember the book I read just before the completion of my last read; however, that is not the case with this book. I seem to be able to remember every detail; so good, bad, or indifferent Sistah Souljah definitely spins a memorable tale.Unlike other reviewers, I truly enjoyed the pictures. Although, Ms. Souljah is extremely descriptive, the visual aid provided a connection for me as the reader with the author leaving me to feel in sync; to have physical confirmation that mind's eye was on point.Anyway back to my review, Sistah is killing my regard for Midnight from "The Coldest Winter Ever". His arrogance is weighting on me. She should have made his character at least 3 years older so his actions would have been more acceptable and believable. Midnight is MacGuiver, James Bond, and Shaft rolled into a teenager. While reading, I am consistently saying "really?", "give me a break", "get the hell out of here", and "oh, please"...So for all you fellow frustrated readers I'm going to make up my own ties for the loose ends. Midnight loses his job and basketball tournaments monies because of his extended stay overseas. When packing to relocate, the receiving blanket with the remaining diamonds is thrown out. With three babies on the way and a mother and sister to support Midnight is desperate for cash. Akema's father seeks revenge because he could not live with being defeated by America again; he sets up a bomb meant to destroy Midnight; but, Akema is blown up in the house in Queens because she failed to meet her father at a previous scheduled location. Midnight's mother is lost within Midnight. She is taken advantage of by other males / Americans; she learns that Midnight's father is dead so she won't return to Sudan. His sister gets raped and Midnight kills his sister's abuser. Midnight goes to jail while in jail, Bangs holds him down (visits him etc). This furthers their relationship. His wife is caring for his 3 children and she is not allowed to go to the jail because Midnight forbade it. While he is jail, his sister gets hooks on drugs, so when he gets out of jail, Midnight gets in the drug game to get closer to the drug lord so he can destroy the drug lord and drug game.Having said all of that, I do recommend this book because it is a unique experience. Plus if you are invested in the Midnight story, you will end up with an unsettling feeling until you see (read) it for yourself. As much as I barked, I'm definitely in for the next release of this series. I will pre-order it and be reading it on day one of the release.

Started off strong…got lazy in the end
Amazing Author Ms. Souljah did a heck of a job with no disrespect, The Coldest Winter Ever and Mignights first installment…but this one was the drop off for me. Midnight was basically the black superman in this book, he was untouchable, almost near bullet proof…and this is no exaggeration..he def could play a role in a marvel movie. I understand being advanced at a young age because some children and teenagers can be that way I get it, but the way she wrote midnight its like he couldn't lose even if he tried, he was a perfect fighter/strategist, the only person that rivaled him far as wits was his master who he actually beat in a sparring match which is ridiculous in itself and his new love interest chiasa. The book was interesting and captivating when she kept the story in brooklyn..it made you want to read more and not put the book down. You wanted to know what the next chapter had in store, it kept you engaged…until he went to Japan, thats where the drop off happened…slowly but it happened. Went to japan to search for his wife only to find a new friend to help him on his journey who he caught feelings for in the process so much so he made her his second wife by the end of the book. His first wife father was a high ranking political figure with major resources and still lost the battle in the end which is ridiculous…his new friend he married also had a father who was a high rank in the military and he ALSO! lost a battle to midnight….at this point its just comical. Midnight isn”t even 20 years old in this book yet he was able to outsmart and out muscle two high ranking men that were in their position probably longer than midnight has been living. All in all towards the end of the book its like things were rushed and sped up to the point it just takes you out of the whole story completely.

This book gave me an interesting look into other cultures
I find that it's quite refreshing to come to know the character of Midnight. A Young intelligent determined Man focused on a divided goal/purpose and willing to lose his life to achieve it. I also have gained a certain degree of respect for the Muslim religion which I new nothing about only different stories here and there. I like both Akemi and Chiasa to very different women but both alluring and captivating in their own way. I am so interested in finding out how things will precede now that they are all back in Brooklyn. So anxious to see what and if the man who raised Akemi will really back off. I have so many questions. enjoyed this book although at times the author was so detail oriented in some of her descriptions at times that I was losing focus a little at times but at the same time gaining quite a bit of knowledge. I would definitely recommend this book from the first series and I would say that it's not for the reader that needs to get right to the nitty gritty of things or wants to read about sex every couple of paragraphs. It's more for the deep minded reader who has an appreciation for knowledgeable and a well thought out storyline.

Enlightening
This book is sooo descriptive and full clear imagery. You k ow whT the characters are feeling and thinking with so much depth!I love the way that the author takes you on a clear path through Islam. It gives me peace seeing the life of an Islamic family through the main character and his wives. It gave me a better understanding how these women can love a man knowing your not the only wife and be best friends. I just loved the way it has been presented. Almost makes me want to be a Muslim wife.

great series
Sistah Soulja is the most detailed author I have read. She breaks down every movement of the characters & the environment that consistently changes ever so often. The depth of the world is in every page & makes you feel like your taking every step in a new world with Midnight. Definitely a great read. Gotta get 3.

Very Educational
I believe have read every Sister Souljah book there is and really enjoyed all of them including this one. However, unlike the others I did struggle in the middle section of the book, as there was a lot of description and the pace of the booked slowed down. I made myself read to the end and found that the middle of the book, although tedious at times, allowed me to have more insight into the charters. The attraction between some of the characters could have been rushed through but Souljah wrote this book as if it was in real time and true love does take time to grow...making it relatable. I am a Christian but I always wanted to learn more about other religions and cultures and thanks to Sister Souljah's thorough research, my insight into Islam and the Japanese culture has grown.

Still good
I am half way through this book it is taking me a lot longer as it as not as gripping as the one before this. It is still a decent book to read with a good storyline, just not as phenomenal as the others.

Not as good as the first book but nice to toe the ends together.
Having zoomed past the 1st book I rushed to order this one eager to continue the story. There was more little details I felt were not so relevant to the main task which went on a bit but that cud have been me wanting to know what happened. I felt the end was a bit rushed esp after spending many pages describing scenery. Still not a bad read. In this book we meet another character into the mix. Another love interest apart from Akemi and we find out more about Akemi past. His other love interest is a strong character similar to midnight and quite different from Akemi.

Midnight and the meaning of love
I first read midnight and loved the relationship between Midnight and Akemi so I decided to go for the part 2 Midnight and the meaning of love. The book was so good that I could not put it down.It gave me a lot of insight into the Asian culture especially the Japanese and Korean one. I thought the book was very well researched. It made me take a good look at my own life...In fact the book was so good that I didnt want it to end. The only critcicism that I have is the way the book ended, I liked Chiasa but I didnt think that Midnight should have taken her as his second wife, in my opinion, it was a bit far fetched..Lets face it, in this day and age, especially in America, how many 14 years old boys take up 2 wives? One is hard enough to deal with both emotionnally and financially. Otherwise, the book was a great read. Since reading the book, i have been obsessed with having an Asian wife of my own
