Excellent overview of music and its role; a global view
I assumed this history of music would be focused on European classical composers for the most part, much like some other music history books I have read, but I was very wrong. In fact, the discussion of European Classical composers is a small subset of the book, which intends to trace the development of music in general globally, starting with prehistoric times through to today's music genres. The path the author takes is interesting, and the well-written text informs without overloading. It was fascinating to read about the various worldwide cultures and the cross-pollination of music styles over the centuries. There is still content on the European music scene, but more in context with music evolution and integration into lifestyles than the music form itself. It's an entertaining and informative read, and I learned quite a bit from this book...a strong recommendation for those interested in music and its development.
