The core idea for this book is the use of operative verbs as tools for designing space. These operative verbs abstract the idea of spatial formation to its most basic terms, allowing for an objective approach to create the foundation for subjective spatial design. Examples of these verbs are expand, inflate, nest, wist, lift, embed, merge and many more. Together they form a visual dictionary decoding the syntax of spatial verbs. The verbs are illustrated with three-dimensional diagrams and pictures of designs which show the verbs 'in action'. This approach was devised, tested, and applied to architectural studio instruction by Anthony Di Mari and Nora Yoo while teaching at Harvard University's Career Discovery Program in Architecture in 2010. As instructors and as recent graduates, they saw a need for this kind of catalogue from both sides - as a reference manual applicable to design students in all stages of their studies, as well as a teaching tool for instructors to help students understand the strong spatial potential of abstract operations. Review: Nice little reference book - Small in size, big in style. Great little book for design reference. Review: I am a design student, this book and its Conditional Design companion are fascinating - So, full disclosure I have had an MFA in painting and sculpture and used to teach art history...now I am getting an associates in design that includes a LOT of CAD and 3-D software classwork. I find these two books to be totally fascinating because of the systematic way they approach building vocabularies and design patterns for the parts of speech. I could easily see building these out as a library of essential design masses.....shoot, I may just do that and see what I can make them do.

An indispensible and accessible text on formal, spatial design ideas.
For design faculty, this is the kind of book that clearly demonstrates to foundation and core studio students the kind of conceptual manipulation they should engage in at the earliest stages of the design process. Students I have introduced the book to have, on the whole, responded well with clearer, more legible, diagrams of their formal site and building intentions. As a consequence, students were more adept at recognizing and illustrating their abstract spatial intentions, demonstrating increased critical thinking skills. Affordable and compact in size, the book should be a required text for foundation and core design studios.

Take my money!
This book is so relevant for architecture students and architects alike. As well as other designers. Why do we do what we do and how do we get across the "big idea"
