The durable plastic clip surrounding the actual pedometer snaps on and off, and the lanyard is surprisingly quite strong!I just wish mine hadn't broken. In less than five months, the plastic half piece that covers the stick refused to stay on. I was using tape for a bit, which worked plenty well (though looked awful), when I made the mistake of losing the device in the washer.Spoiler alert, but this thing can't survive a washer. I didn't turn on at all afterwards, when I realized my mistake. Luckily, I didn't let it in the dryer. Be wary of where the pedometer is, because it's pinky-length!
