The best of its kind.
I'm a big fan of Smallrig's photographic accessories and this is a good addition. It's very easy to install and has plenty of attachment points for things like microphones, lights, grips and power bank clamps. Well made and sturdy too, and it fits well on my iPhone 16 Pro. it's the best of its type and very good value for money.

You Need The Full Kit
So I've been testing this for over a month now to really put it though its paces in different scenarios and I have to say I'm really impressed. I received this as part of the Amazon Vine program so although it was given to me for testing I ensure all reviews and fair and truthful and reflect my findings.I had heard of this brand but never been hands on with it so when I got to have a hands on I was excited. The first thing I noticed is that it has two sections, the inner case and then the metal endoskeleton. The inner case is simple to install and allows for use of all functions of the phone but you will want to use the combo of both the inner and external hard case. The main issue is that once you add the outer case, the quick action button in not accessible. A pretty big oversight in my opinion. Now I get that you can add other items from the Smallrig range which would then negate the need for accessing this button BUT if you are just using this case on its own then this is a pretty big issue for me.This brings me to the case itself. Yes, it has the amazing build quality, and you really won't get better, but in my eyes, I'd never pay £60 for just a phone case on its own. I feel if you are buying SmallRig then you would be buying it to use the accessories which then makes me wonder why they only sell this case on its own rather than as the set.So full disclosure i paid to purchase the handles to go with it after having it for a few weeks as I just had this niggling feeling that I was missing out. Maybe you can call it FOMO. So yes I was suitably impressed with the case build and design but without the handles and extras it really is only half a solution. All in all I feel it's a great product but I would not recommend it just as a phone case given the missing access to the quick action button vs the price but I definitely would recommend it if you are going to get the full kit.

Almost perfect….. almost. Smallrig please sort issues
Overall system is superb, love it. The quick release handles are awesome and the Bluetooth remote is great.Downside is…side camera button is covered and can’t be accessed at allShould be two clips for when phones inserted into cage, ever so slightly loose with just the one clipIf your in a suitable environment this would be ok but, out in the real world, I’m not sure it would stand up to rigorous abuse, namely the clip holding the phone in.Smallrig please sort these issues out as it’s a great system other wise.

Oversight
We love SmallRig products in our household and we were really excited to give this a try with the new iPhone 16 Pro.What we immediately found is that the new camera control feature has not been accounted for which is a huge shame as this can be very useful for quickly launching the camera. I guess the idea was that you would use the shutter option in the handles that you can get (we didn't get those for this review)Otherwise the build quality is as solid as we have come to expect from this brand. The number of attachment points make this really convenient for run and gun shooting and the quick release is great for the moments that you need the phone out of the rig quickly.A great product with one big misstep. 4.5 stars.

A disaster
The media could not be loaded. This new cage from Smallrig is a disaster. What were they thinking? The cage covers the new camera button on the iPhone 16 Pro. That button is quite handy if you see something in the street and need to start shooting straight away so you won't miss whatever is happening.Nevertheless, I could live without that button. What I can not live with is the fact that my very expensive iPhone 16 Pro 512 GB (£1,299 at Apple) is held in the cage by just a small button . There is nothing else! It's just not safe (see video). Moreover, the phone shakes in the cage! Will that scratch it and devalue the phone for sale in future? One thing is for sure: This is the first wobbly cage/case ever.Yes, cage/case. Smallrig had this nice idea of combining a cage with a case what is very handy.Unfortunately, they went very wrong in the locking system and the covering of the place for the camera button. But they didn't forget to put some useless decorative thing with their name. That space could have been used to put something else, a shoe mount, for example, leaving room along the side of the cage for an open space which would allow the use of the camera button on the iPhone 16 Pro.I like Smallrig and have several of their products including the cage for iPhone 14 Pro , which is excellent. I normally use the Beastgrip cage but when I want to go lighter and smaller then I use the Smallrig cage.I upgraded to the 16 Pro and, as always , need to get new cases and cages because Apple makes sure that each new iPhone is slightly bigger or smaller than the previous model . Just enough to force everybody to buy new cases. And they claim to be so concerned about the environment...The 16 Pro almost fits in the Smallrig cage for 14 Pro (please see video) where you slide the phone down the cage . It's tight but the placement of the holes for the lenses doesn't match with the 16 Pro. The cage for the 14 Pro (and probably the one for the 15 Pro as well) is extremely safe. Even if the lock breaks (very unlikely) your phone will not slide up the cage on its own. Conclusion: I will send the cage back for a full refund. What a shame!
