Japanese Ink Painting

This is a smashing book. There are plenty of paintings and explanations are given in a straight forward, if quite formal way by modern day standards. To me some formality is a part of the attraction of this art form. The book covers tools, brush manipulation, paper, techniques, painting objects, the use of colour, mounting and seals. There are several exercises which use images and show directions of brush in a numbered order as well as written information. I think after reading the instructions anyone who is prepared to relax and let their brush go with the flow will enjoy this. There are many snippets of interesting information about Japanese life and art. I know that just flicking through it made me feel soothed and relaxed. I'd say it's not one for the average modern day very young child but maybe teenage on. Note that there isn't a list of suppliers but you can easily get supplies on line .

As a complete beginner this book is very good. The history and philosophy of the practice is very well written. The practical aspects are good but not always easy to follow, but gives you a very good guide.

It has beeen a wonderful reading,very simple but very powerful its content! I suggest it to all painting art lovers because it shows another way, the eastern way, to see and live the art of painting. It can enrich our vew about beauty and harmony.

Just starting out with Japanese ink. Think this book will inspire me very well composed tries to make it easy for beginner not daunting . First class would recommend.
