AVID READER
THIS BOOK 3 TIMES I TRIED TO ORDER THROUGH THE NATIONAL CHAIN, BARNES & NOBLE. THE VENDER PULLED OUT. I'M GLAD I FINALLY GOT IT. EDWARD RUTHERFURD REALLY DID HIS HOMEWORK, FOR RESEARCHING THE HISTORY. IF YOU ARE NEW TO EDWARD RUTHERFURD, THIS IS 1 OF 3 BOOKS TO THE TRILOGY. I HAVE READ SEVERAL BY HIM, JAMES A. MICHENER, KEN FOLLET, AND NELSON DEMILLE. THEY ALL WRITE THICK BOOKS, USUALLY NOT SEQUEALS, BUT JAMES MICHENER IS CLOSEST TO EDWARD RUTHERFURD, IN HIS WRITINGS. THE DIFFERENCE IS EDWARD RUTHERFURD WRITES ABOUT CITIES, JAMES MICHENER USUALLY, BUT NOT ALWAYS WRITES ABOUT STATES, OF THE USA.. JAMES MICHENER, OR BETTER KNOWN AS JAMES A. MICHENER AND EDWARD RUTHERFURD, BOOKS USUALLY ARE 800 PAGES OR LONGER, SO YOU CAN EASILY GET READING, AND KNOW THE BOOK WON'T END TOO SOON!!!!!!!!!!!

Seems as if I'm always a bit late to the party!
As a family historian and genealogist with Irish roots, this epic historical novel lends perspective to my ancestors struggles and provides insights into my parents political views . The appreciation of Edward Rutherford's writings started this past spring when a friend recommended his historical novel 'New York' . The 862 -page novel was consumed within 10 days and so of course, needing to know and understanding more, I order 'Ireland Awakening'. Apparently I'm a bit late to the party as his historical Irish novels started with 'The Forest' and then 'Dublin' so apparently...I'm working backwards! In any case, Rutherford's ability to interweave fictional narrative with the history of Ireland and its people is engaging, addictive, and certainly enlightening. If you love a good read, or have a droplet of Irish DNA - then this is the book for you!

Enjoyable read.
Very well written historical fiction. The characters are well defined, many intriguing subplots. I really like all Edward Rutherford's books, they are historically accurate with good fictional characters to enhance the story line.

This is a typical Rutherfurd saga, in this case tracing the history of a beautiful country and its constant religious struggles.
