I would think its raw material (graphite) is the same. The differences is how users (artists/sketchers) use them. If tin, use brush. If disc like the above is hand grib, and you more variety is sized on line and stroke. Good for my painterly or looser (expressive strokes). Both Tin and Disc demo are available on youtube. Ideal to check the demo video out before commiting a purchase?

Love the water soluble graphite that comes in a tin. Does this come with some kind of case?

I can't remember about the singletons. The three-pack comes with a sturdy cork base, with a flexible plastic slider that fits over it. If one doesn't go into artistic frenzies when one works, I think it can hold up. I bought two stand-alones to supplement the three-pack, so I have a blue, a yellow, a teal-green, an orangey-red, and a burgundy so that I have a somewhat-complete palette. These chalks are slender enough in depth that I put the two stand-alones (once dry) each on top of one of the others in the cork tray, and the slider fits over the whole sheebang. IIRC, the standalones came wrapped in a peel-off film. I'm mostly a watercolorist, bought these to satisfy my curiosity, don't use them a lot. Hth. Cheers.
