This is an excellent and well-designed lap desk.I got the black with the tweedy gray fabric. I really liked the look of both options but knew I'd use a lap desk so much that I'd end up getting lighter colors dirty. I really like the tweedy look of the gray fabric-- it looks much nicer and classier than a flat gray.The padded wrist rest is great for providing some relief to your hands, but it's also terrific because it keeps your laptop (or coloring book, or whatever) from sliding forward. This allows you to position the desk at whatever angle is comfortable for you without worrying about dumping everything on it into your lap.Speaking of thoughtful design, the handle at the top is a nice touch that makes a lot of difference. If you want to move this from room to room, you can just grab the handle and don't have to shove this under your arm. It makes it so much easier to move around.I also like the beanbag-type base (the cushion on the bottom). Because it's filled with microbeads, it conforms perfectly to your lap-- and, when you shift positions, it re-adjusts to be just as comfortable as it was before. It's just as comfortable to sit with your legs crossed as it is to sit with them straight out, or to sit with the desk flat versus tipped at a 45 degree angle-- the base of the desk quietly shifts to be comfortable no matter what.Another clever design element is that the desk incorporates storage. There's a pocket at the top of the desk, sewn into the fabric. It's invisible, and you won't know it's there if you're not using it, but you can easily slip small things into it-- charging cables, highlighters, whatever. There's also a long slot along the top of the lap desk, and you can prop your iPad or e-reader in it, your pencils and pens, your phone-- whatever little objects you have with you while working or relaxing. There's a grippy strip in that long slot that helps them stay put.I have a 16" laptop, and it fits easily on this desk. The desk's top is very slightly textured (similar to woodgrain, but plastic), and I think that helps the base of the laptop grip. You would need to put something under a sheet of paper if you're writing, but you'll have no problem with a coloring book, journal, notebook, etc. My laptop is too big to allow a mouse to squeeze easily onto the desk alongside it, but a smaller laptop wouldn't have that problem (I think that's more a "me" problem than a desk design problem!). I use the trackpad rather than a mouse, so it's a non-issue for me.Other things I've used this lap desk for (so far!): a surface for building Legos, a place to write in my journal, a place to color in a coloring book, a place to put my plate while I ate lunch. The sky is the limit, in other words!I recommend this without reservation to students, employees, and basically anyone who does . . . well, anything. I had a lap desk when I was in college and have used them ever since (they're a great student gift). This is lightweight enough for anyone to move around easily-- even children and the elderly-- so there's really no one who can't find a use for it. It's well-designed and endlessly useful.

I'm a PhD student who moved to a major US city for school. Because the room I rent is so small, I don't have a desk and do my schoolwork at home in a chair. I bought a cheap $5 lap desk from target that I've been using for the last year, but I've been wanting something larger. This lap desk looked perfect.As I unwrapped it, I was immediately impressed with how well made and designed it was. The material is solid, and the design is smart--even curving around where it fits on a person's waist. For my first task, I decided to use this while journaling. To my surprise, the desk was smaller than I expected. My journal barely fits between the wrist support and the pencil/device holder. The wrist support is also so large that it's a bit awkward when trying to write.When using a computer, the laptop generally needs to sit on top of the pencil/device holder to use comfortably or if your laptop is larger than 13". These might end up feeling like insignificant issues over time, and in that case I may revisit this review to add a star. But right out of the gate, these are things I notice.Overall, the beauty and great construction of this lap desk are a huge win. I also love the handle that makes it so easily portable. I recommend this as a really great option for people who want to invest in a better quality product.
