Helpful "cliff notes" for the topic
Helpful "cliff notes" for the topic. Covers the recruitment, organization, uniforms, and equipment of a brief topic, although there seems to be some controversy about uniform interpretation: The authors' defense of their reconstruction for the New Orleans Greys (plate B3) is on p. 41.

The author rambles and the artwork was lame
A major dis-appointment. The author's text rambled a lot and it leaves the reader more than a little confused about both the Revolution and the Republic of Texas. And when Reid called Sam Houston "over-rated" I almost fell out of my chair. No, Houston was not a "god" but he was a far far better commander than the the plodder J.W. Fannin or the loonies of the Matamoras fiasco. The artist, the late Richard Hook has done some really good paintings in the past but this time he fell from grace. In the first plate he shows way too much buckskin on some of his figures. They look more like "mountain men" rather than the civilian militia that Texas was able to field. In the next plate the depiction of a "New Orleans Grey" was bizarre to say the least. In spite of their name, the artist put this figure in a BROWN jacket. (??????) At least he didn't fall into the trap of putting a "Grey" into a U.S. 1820's jacket and an 1820's U.S. "Wheel cap" . There is NO evidence of this in ANY period sources. I also noticed that the "Army of Reserve" raised by Thomas J. Chambers was ignored completely. Chambers spent over $10,000 of his own funds to equip between 500 and 1,000 men with uniforms of "linsey-woolsey", rifles, muskets, howitzers and a company of cavalry.Original receipts survive for having helmets made in addition to coatees. Sometimes Osprey hits it out of the park and other times it falls flat.
