Fabulous guide for novices through to experienced home artists
Don't get me wrong, I am said to be pretty good at drawing. I can take a drawing from someone else and produce a very good copy of it. I adore art, both doing as well as viewing and collecting. It is my number one hobby. I purchased this book because what I do need is help with creating my own unique pieces. I have a lot of ideas of what I want to do but lack the courage to start them off. The book arrived so fast that I thought someone collected it from the warehouse and drove it round to my house. I ordered this at 9pm on a Friday evening and at 10am Sat it was in my hand. I started lesson one that evening and roped my 8 year old into it too. Despite the initial moaning and complaints he soon got into it and we sat there drawing the circles and giving them dimension and I have to say the effects of the lesson are so swift that you literally notice your talent improving by the minute. I learned so much in just a single lesson that I could not wait to get on with the rest of the book. Now every time I have a spare minute I shoot off to my drawing desk and start a new lesson - even if I cant finish it - at least getting it started is the objective of the day. Mark Kistler produces a superb introduction to the art of drawing and his approach is fascinating as well as extremely easy to follow. The improvement I have seen in just the first few lessons has left me astonished and I cant but help wonder where my art will be by the time I finish the book. I recommend this book for anyone from a person who has never before drawn anything right through to a good home artists. There are superb tips on creating depth in your drawings and I reckon anyone apart from perhaps professional artists will gain something from this book. There are courses out there costing £750 for 2 weeks which will teach you the same as you will find in this book for a fraction of the cost. If you are serious about taking your drawings to teh next level then this is for you. The only drawback I can think of at the moment is why has he not written more books like this. He has written quite a few books for kids and 3d drawing which seems to be his forte but I think this fella could easily produce more books on all the other forms of drawing right down to getting detail to work for you. It might look like an idiots guide book for artists but believe me it will be a well worn book on your shelf if you get your hands on it. I even sit and read it when I cannot draw - for the tips and suggestions. Well worth the £8 investment

Best beginner's guide I've seen
This book is the best guide to learning to draw I've ever seen. It really is geared towards a complete beginner - far too many so-called beginner's drawing books start off with something like 'this is a pencil' but then almost immediately start showing beautifully drawn, lifelike groups of figures, animals, landscapes, etc. with a vague suggestion that you should be able to draw them from life. Mark Kistler's book isn't like that. He leads the beginner by the hand through small steps - and they're not just 'copy me' instructions, either - they are 'this is how it's done' instructions, readily applicable to other subjects. As someone who has repeatedly tried to learn to draw, and failed miserably every time, this book is a delight. By the end of the first lesson (30 minutes or so) I'd drawn a peach from my fridge, shaded it, and it actually looked like a peach! In 3 dimensions too! Amazing! I highly recommended this book for all budding but hopeless artists like me - it will set you on the right path. My copy is on the Kindle, although I'm reading it on the Kindle app of an iPad. Illustrations are very clear in the Kindle version (i'd thought they might not be) and they are even easy to follow on the tiny screen of my iPhone (which also has Amazon's Kindle app). Great book.

Book
Good for learning the very basic basics of perspective, arrangement of objects or texture, but you won't learn more advanced methods from it.

Superb!!!
Thank you, thank you, Mark Kistler for this outstanding book! I was a complete beginner (my efforts in the pretest at the start of the book were completely laughable!!), but now, having just finished the final chapter, I have a sketchbook filled with drawings that I can't quite believe I've created! Not only were the exercises fun, but they have firmly embedded the fundamental 'laws' of drawing in my mind without having to wade through a lot of dry text. There are so many books out there that claim to be beginners' guides but really aren't. I bought one of these for my daughter at the same time as ordering Mark's book for myself but realised immediately that it was far too complex, so ordered a second copy of this for her instead. Ultimately I am interested in urban sketching and I have bought several more books on this subject, all of which now make perfect sense after such a solid grounding. My drawing journey has only just started but with Mark's help I can continue with confidence and inspiration. Can't rate this highly enough!!!!

Excellent and perfect to learn.
As somebody that has spent my life so far (40 plus years) claiming I cannot draw, I was a bit sceptical that I would learn to draw. But I did, and with fun and so quickly too. Mark gets you drawing fun and useful shapes without necessarily knowing the detail behind the why, though it is often easy to see why as an adult. The tricks and techniques are great. I've been drawing a cube the same way for years and to relearn that was simpler and with better results. Easy enough to teach to my 5 year old in a few minutes. As for shading, I've always avoided it til now - but wouldn't leave it out ever now. It took me far more than 30 days, but that's just because I only did a few lessons a week. But 20 mins is all you need and usually a bit more to do the bonuses and once you get going. So pleased I bought this and invested the time to improve. I feel I can draw confidently and also pass some knowledge on now rather than just bad stick men. I'm sure my journey is just starting...

If you want to learn how to draw, this is the book for you!
I used to draw an exceptionally long time ago. However, I always wanted to get back to it, but staring at a blank page was not working for me. I purchased multiple books to get me started and finally found the right one. In all fairness, I started with colouring books until I got the confidence to dare to do more. This book will take you through simple activities that you can use to create your own masterpieces after just a few short lessons. The approach used to teach encourages students to experiment and be brave. As an educator, I can attest that this is a phenomenal textbook for any learner. After each lesson, students are challenged to a bonus activity that allows them to use the concepts learned. The writing and explanations are straightforward and fun. I just enjoy reading the instructions, as the writing is friendly, humorous, and feels directed right to you. It is like the after sees your fears and apprehensions and provides encouragement and advice to overcome it.This book not only got me started to draw again, but it provides you with sound fundamentals from the first lesson. You learn to draw properly. I like to complete the lessons in pencil and challenge myself to use coloured pencils and introduced colour to complete the bonus activities.Attached images are copies of bonus activities I completed within the first few lessons. The book exceeded my wildest expectations. If you have kids or friends interested in drawing, this is a phenomenal resource to complete the classes together. I highly recommend this book.

Meu desenho melhorou

This is a good warmup book for your drawing skills
I wanted to brush up my drawing skills, and needed a book to take me through a few basic exercises quickly. This book fit the bill perfectly.I worked through all the exercises in this book in the span of around 10-12 days. I was not unhappy with the results. I have now moved on to other books to further my education in drawing. I feel a bit more confident in my drawing abilities than when I started, now that I have a basic repertoire of interesting (but simple) images that I drew from this book. What I like about this book: it takes us through very simple exercises that expose us to different elements of drawing, such as shading, mark-making, and perspective. I especially liked the author's system of 9 rules of drawing. The author is not hesitant to recommend tracing and copying to learn drawing skills. I hadn't done this in a while and had forgotten how much fun it was. I also liked the author's emphasis on getting the student to draw images well quickly. The exercises themselves weren't very difficult since I used to draw and paint quite a bit as a kid and was somewhat good at it (relatively speaking). But I am revisiting these skills after a period of several decades, and my skills were definitely rusty.I wish the author had more practice exercises that took us through further elements of drawing. He also could have gone through a bit more technicalities of how to accurately draw from life, and how to shade. But I guess this book was meant for actual beginners in drawing. Note that you won't be able to draw complicated pictures right after this book. That will require further studying and practice. But this book will get you started in that journey. All in all, it was money well spent, and cost me less than a couple of in person drawing classes (in Indian terms). I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to get started in drawing.
