good value
It is exactly as I had expected. Once you adjust the focus and gain the night vision is serviceable. I am very satisfied.

Cheap toy
Before buying this little scope, I already had a Yukon Digital Ranger "monocular" which I found to have surprisingly decent low light performance and image quality WITHOUT any IR illumination. Although none of these digital scopes are even close to Gen 2 optics, the Yukon was still very useable without worrying about bright light source damage. I bought this sight when it was on sale because it was smaller/lighter than the Yukon. Unfortunately, the performance is very disappointing. This scope has poor image quality and NO light sensitivity. The IR illuminator does work quite well and produces a bright spot beam, and don't expect to see anything without it. Most decent consumer cctv (ir capable) cameras can see more stuff without external illumination. Since these sights use common cctv sensors anyway, I would think they would at least select a good one. The viewfinder optics aren't very good either as the image looks distant and its hard to achieve satisfactory focus. This is a shame because the form factor is good and allows manipulation of all controls single-handed, and like the Yukon, you have the option of turning OFF the IR. Save your money and buy something better.

It's really a GEN 1.
Attached to this scope is a sticky label which reads, "Gen 2 night vision equivalent." So? It's a Gen 1, but, the view finder is black and white (starkly so with the IR turned up on high), instead of 'glowing green'. To keep this brief, the green allows one to view, thought poorly, using ambient light, while Sightmark doesn't work well without the IR turned on. BUT, click on the IR and it's like turning on a spotlight in a dark room, the closer the object, the more one needs to turn down the IR. When you do, the contrast is poorer (to me) than the green. And, this black and white display completely ruins any natural night vision once you put it back in the case. The green allows some residual vision once you put it away. Distance? Let's be real, if you are watching Rocky Raccoon raiding your garbage can, either will do. If you want to run through the woods like Rambo, neither will do. Why the low rating, I think they are falsely labeling their product in the adds you read, while disclaiming these very adds by attaching the above sticky note. Bottom line, probably to those who aren't familiar with night scopes, black and white initially maybe a familiar venue, but if you are used to the 'spooky' green, stick with it. Lastly, I'm trying to cover everything, the green is easily damaged by bright light, Sightmark claims their scope isn't. Maybe so, I'm not willing to validate this.
