Complex but ultimately rewarding.
I'd been looking at the Auchentoshan American Oak which is regularly on offer in the supermarkets as well as online, but with mixed reviews about its value for money I held off. When I saw this on a decent Amazon deal I knew I had to grab it and I'm glad I did. This whisky starts its life the same as the cheaper American Oak offering, taking on those bourbon flavours as a sort of a bass note to the whisky. It then moves onto Olorosso casks and Pedro Ximenez casks where it takes on buckets of fruit flavour and a beautiful rosy colour too. As someone who has bottles of both these sherries in the drinks cabinet it's amazing to see just how much of the flavour is transferred to this whisky. To me it tastes really plummy, i.e. rich dark fruits rather than light citrus notes, but with a sweet, syrupy sticky finish like a stick toffee pudding. It really is incredibly complex and yet one of the easiest whiskies to discern certain flavours from, the finish is quite distinct from the initial taste and everything works in harmony. Its skill in doing this reminds me of the excellent Aberlour A'Bunadh in its early batches, although this is much sweeter and richer in tone.I think it's well worth its original price tag to be honest, especially for those who want to move up from a budget offering and try their hand at serious whisky tasting. This would go great with Christmas pudding instead of the usual brandy or dessert wine and the sweetness would stand up to sticky sweet puddings easily.

Best single malt there is for under £50
I've been a scotch drinker for over20 years and Three Wood remains in my opinion the best single malt you can buy for under £50. It has a wonderful, warm and uplifting aroma that compliments a sweet and complex flavour, with all the layers and undertones that it's triple cask aging process promises. It keeps on giving with every sip, reminiscent of a good cognac, and unless you're one of these peat obsessives with a longing for overpowering smokiness there will be something there for you. I've discovered it in one or two bars and restaurants overseas whilst on business trips (notably in Stockholm where is was staggeringly overpriced!) and when I've recommend it to colleagues and clients they have unfailingly thanked me for the tip and mostly have wound up buying a bottle for themselves! At the price you pay here on Amazon it is a bargain, and even more so when on offer as it has been recently, so if you haven't tried it, go ahead and treat yourself, you shan't be disappointed :)

Love it
I adore This stuff. I was going to give up on scotch all together after trying a few that tasted like the seaside town I love in. So I bought a pack of minis from auchentoshan and I like them all. But this one is my favourite. Not I've had the American oak, 12 year old, virgin oak, blood oak and 21 year old. And out of all of those this one is the best. I love the distillery character of auchentoshan but the fact that this one reminds me of the burnt edges of a Christmas cake or spotted dick pudding just means it tops the rest. I love it. I really do. And because I work a min wage job it's gonna be hard for me to find another whisky because this one cost alot (for me) and I'm not going to be able to buy this and somrthing else.

Classic
This used to be my go to whisky. The the first thing you notice is this one has a darker than normal colour, You can smell the sherry and toffee, however once it hits the palate you will taste the chocolate and varied fruits. I usually have this with a piece of dark chocolate (as it hightens the taste) but each to their own.

A Very Friendly Scotch
Usually people think of Scotch as being aggressive and complex. Not something for everyone, but Auchentoshan three wood is a warm friendly whisky, certainly not feeling as if it were a 43%, but not watered down either. If you know whisky, and you've had bourbon and heavily sherried whiskies you know exactly what to expect. It starts with a vanilla/caramel flavour which stays very much caramel due to the two different sherry casks. On the finish you get more of the same, but you can search through for those nut and spice notes advertised. A wonderful whisky if you can get it for £35 or under, personally I wouldn't pay any more than that. However if you're an American or Japanese whisky fan you may really like this.

It’s a lovely sweet dram. Most Speyside whiskys I drink I
Superb dram. Very well balanced. It’s a lovely sweet dram. Most Speyside whiskys I drink I.e Tamnavulin or Aberlour, toffee is the forefront flavour. With this whisky it blends in more with the balance of fruit. The first taste I got was more of blackberrys and raisins followed by toffee. It’s a very smooth and easy to drink whisky. It has a wonderful nose filled with fruit. It’s bottled at 43% which Is perfect for those that prefer to drink the whisky straight. It adds a little more depth to the flavour I have always found.I will buy againP.s it’s a non peaty whisky. So it would appeal more to most Speyside fans than Islay.

Amazing scotch
I had my doubts as to whether I should buy an unfamiliar brand of Scotch though Amazon. My doubts were alleviated with my first sip. This Scotch is the most amazing that I have ever tasted. As soon as my travels allow me to be in one place for long enough, I will order a few bottles of the 3 wood single malt.

Fantastic winter warmer, one of the greats for the price.
I am a great fan of lowland whisky, and have always had a soft spot for Auchentoshan - intially probably because of the name! The Three Wood is a fantastic winter warmer, it is a 12 year old whisky, matured for 10 years in bourbon casks then finished for one year in Oloroso Sherry and then one year in Pedro Ximenez Sherry. What does that mean? Well it has sweet and malty notes, it is rich and complex, but smooth with just enough bite. Quite delicious really, and probably one of my favourites.(I hope you've found this helpful, if so please click!)

Milder Whisky
