.com Kathy Smith's Step Workout is a splendid introduction to step for the novice, and a solid workout for intermediates. The main workout consists of three 12-minute, progressive step segments. Beginners do only the first, then fast-forward to the cool-down; intermediates do the first two; seasoned steppers may do all three. The beginning segment uses very simple moves repeated frequently: the basic up-up-down-down, knee lifts, toe taps, leg curls, and leg lifts. The intermediate segment introduces more moves, still presented simply, and puts them together into simple combinations. It's athletically more challenging, but not complicated. The advanced segment adds more strenuous moves such as straddles, lunges, and gentle propulsion moves. After the cool-down is an abdominal segment using the step as a slant board, and then a short upper-body sculpting segment starting with pushups and then using weights. At the end, a special teaching guide for novice steppers demonstrates the basics of stepping. Experienced steppers who like a lot of choreography will get bored quickly, but if you want the athleticism of step without complicated choreography, you'll be happy here. Smith's cueing and safety guidelines, as always, are excellent. --Joan Price

From a clumsy girls point of view
Okay, so I'm not a gazelle. I'm not graceful and I'm not light on my feet. We have an eliptical which is probably best suited to my skill level. It's hard to fall off of one. :-) But I hate it. I mean, I devise ways of not looking at the clock and the minutes just drag on and on and on. So I bought a step and I bought this workout as my introduction to stepping based on the stellar reviews here at Amazon.I love it! Stepping is really much less boring than the "eviliptical". Okay, so I fell down on my #@%#$% the first time I followed this tape. I would chalk that up to me, not the tape. As a child my grandmother put me in ballet. After two lessons the instructor met her at the door and told her I'd be better of in tap. The fact that I only fell once and didn't kill myself is actually a testimonial for Kathy Smith!I would advise anybody who is new to stepping and coordination-challenged like me to skip doing the arms when first starting. Just look at the feet and do those. Add in arms slowly over time. I still do just feet in some things. And be careful with the move "over the top" because that's the move that sent my feet "over the top" of my head. The ab section is short, but a killer. Don't start on the incline! Just start flat.Kathy is fairly easy to follow, the music is cheeful, and the moves are challenging enough to keep you from thinking about how much it sucks to actually do them. All in all a great workout for me! The only annoying thing is Kathy does let off a high pitched "drill team" squeal once in a while and say things like, "Now that you've got that down let's pick up the pace" (Uh, wait, I don't got that down!) Thank God for rewind. But all in all she's a lot less "chipper" than some other aerobics tapes, so it's not bad. And Kathy doesn't have an annoying voice either--a big plus! She's also older. I find it easier to take instruction from somebody who isn't carded when the buy booze.

Solid Workout!
I enjoy this workout! Sometimes I just want a simple but solid workout and this is it. I don't necessarily want to be bouncing and cartwheeling all over the place all the time but still do not like a day to go to waste. This workout is perfect for those days.COMPLAINT: and not just this one but all workout dvds. Why can't the producers recognize that no matter how proud they may be of their music soundtrack it will still NEVER be good enough for many of us!!!! As a result .... and thank god for ipods which have made the creation of our own workout music so easy peasy .... many of us have our own playlists?????? Why can' they produce a workout with a "no music" option so we can still follow the directions easily and enjoy our playlist?????? Still today in 2012 we can't have an easy time hearing the instructors voice with our own personal playlists without the confusion of their music soundtrack. UNbelievable!!!! It's so elementary. Marketing 101. Business 101. Customer Service 101. ONE OH ONE! Really irritating!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Still love this workout after 18 years!
New Years day 17 years ago I started doing Kathy's Step Workout. I did that workout religiously 5 days a week for 2 years. It was like brushing my teeth, part of the daily routine. I got into the best shape of my life. I did, however include strength training after the first year and I did add power moves and sincopatiion(spell?)to the step workout. I have used this workout off and on over the years and it is still one of my favorites. I think that no workout is boring if you are in the Zone, and by that I mean that you enjoy and do each movement as though you were the video star. If you are thinking about doing the best for your body, who cares about the thong workout gear and the music. Make it about you. I noticed that this DVD has been discontinued by the manufacturer but alas I will use mine to to get me into the best shape ever again. It is my gift to me for my 55th this year. Yes I started the first day of 2010 with this workout and I still enjoy it very much. I am proud to say that at my age I can kick cardio butt compared to my younger friends and family members. I have several of Kathy Smith's workouts, but this is my all time favorite. Thank You Kathy Smith for all the years of great workouts!

A fantastic step workout
This is a re-release of one of Kathy Smith's VHS workouts from around 2003. It is my all-time favourite step workout ever, from any instructor. It breaks down like this:- An 8 minute warmup- A 12 minute step routine (beginners) but is great for all levels!- A 13 minute intermediate step routine but is also great for all levels.- A 10 minute advanced step routine.- A 5 minute lower body cool down- A 5 minute abdominal toning session- 8 minutes of upper body- 5 minutes of a cool down and stretch. The biggest asset to Kathy's DVD's is that it is suitable for all levels. She classifies parts of her DVD as beginner / intermediate / advanced but it is more so that beginners can just do 12 minutes of stepping, etc. The whole workout is fantastic and is not too hard to follow. I am not the most co-ordinated person in the world and I can do her workout without stumbling around like an idiot (which trust me, I would do if it contained a lot of dancey-steps).I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone that is interested in step aerobics. It's a great workout and you won't be disappointed!

Great step workout
Love this workout - I was so happy to find this in DVD as I had it on VHS many years ago. Easy to follow and no additional chatter that makes some videos unbearable to watch over and over. With stepping, you can always challenge yourself by increasing step height. Love Kathy Smith and this very challenging routine.

Good Overall Workout
I quite enjoy Kathy Smith's step aerobic. She breaks it down into segments from beginner to intermediate and advanced level step user. She also has a separate exercise for abdominals and toning upper body. There's warm up and cool down segments. All can be fastforwarded to the segments you want. Her movement involves both hand and lower leg so expect to sweat. The step motion are relatively straightforward and if you are a beginner or unfamiliar with steps and would like to try then this DVD is for you. It will take a while to get used to both the arm and leg coordination! It's less complicated than some (compared to Rob Glick). Good overall.

The best Step workout ever, without complicated steps!!
I love this step dvd. I enjoy step aerobics and enjoy a cardio challenge, but what I don't like it step dvd's that have overly complicated step routine, where they have you spinning around like a lunatic.Thyis dvd is split into 3 (or it might be 4) sections. Warm up. Section1 section 2 and cool down. It lasts around 1 hour. You're really sweating by the end of your workout, but like I say the moves a varied but not complicated.I really enjoy doing this dvd and highly recommend it.The only other step dvd that offers a cardio challenge (as in it's not for beginner - cardio wise) is Gilads.

Check it will work
Its my own fault I guess but I didn't realise US DVD's might not play in the UK. I haven't been able to use DVD. My advice is check that this will work on your DVD player before ordering.

Another great workout from Kathy Smith
This is another great step workout from Kathy Smith, easy to follow, and includes stomach and upper body toning exercises. This video, combined with 'Great Bums and Thighs' workout will give you excellent results.
