Ban Chao, courtesy name Zhongsheng, was a famous Chinese general and diplomat of the Eastern Han Dynasty, and an important figure in exploring and maintaining the relationship between Han Dynasty and the Western Regions. He was born in a literary and official family in Fufeng, now Xianyang, Shaanxi; he was the son of the historian Ban Biao and the younger brother of Ban Gu who wrote the historical text Book of Han, thus they were known as ""Three Bans"". However, his fame was not derived from literary achievements but joining the army to stabilize the borderland of Han Dynasty and becoming a famous general of the Eastern Han Dynasty. In the period of 31 years in Western Regions, he correctly performed the Han Dynasty policy of ""Breaking the Right Arm of Xiongnu"" with his extraordinary political and military talents and adhered to the principle of winning over the most, dividing, separating and expelling the Xiongnu forces to win every war and attack. Therefore, he not only maintained the safety of the motherland, but also strengthened the contact with the Western Regions, making outstanding contributions to the formation, consolidation and development of China as a multi-ethnic country.
