Parky: My Autobiography

Fascinating
This is the autobiography of one of Britain's favourite television presenters Sir Michael Parkinson.Initially when I purchased this book I was looking forward to reading anecdotes from some of the big interviews over the years such as Ali, Cagney, Bette Davis, John Wayne etc etc but surprisingly it was the unknown stories that I was more taken by. It was fascinating to read about Michael's life before reaching the dizzy heights of fame. His stories from his times in the army and as a junior reporter make more interesting reading and for me far more entertaining than the successful years that followed.Strangely enough I found the very parts I had been looking forward to reading as a slight let down to the rest of the book. Yes the stories were still interesting and fondly remembered but I had enjoyed the less known side much more.Reading this book you are left realising what a job he had when he got the opportunity to meet, chat and have a drink with his idols

More about cricket than anything else
I was a little disappointed in this book, which I was really looking forward to reading. I had hoped for more anecdotes about the people he had interviewed and more of his family, but an awful lot of the book is about cricket, Parky's passion. As someone who cannot abide the game and finds it totally boring, I found a lot of the book likewise. There are a lot of interesting things in it and it was nice to read about his parents and growing up, but unless you area cricket officianado or don't mind endless references to it, I think you will be as disappointed as I was. Don't get me wrong, it's well written and I did chuckle at some parts but for an awful lot I was skimming it and couldn't wait to get past it to the next interesting part. Sorry Parky.
