Most 'Best of' albums seem to consist of the handful of hit singles and then padded out with not so good stuff. This album is full of great songs and even the few I had not heard before are top quality.

I'm not a big country music fan. I'm not a great John Denver fan: but the selection of tracks on this album are, in my opinion, just about the best tunes the man ever wrote and sang. (amazon give you the songs list). As far as I can tell these are all original recordings. Some time later in his career John Denver re- recorded several of his most popular songs saying he felt his voice was better and more mature. (for a taste of these versions listen to his 2004 "Best Of" album). Personally I infinitely prefer the original recordings on this album; they have a warmth, sincerity and charm that is sadly lacking in the over- orchestrated retakes. Coupled with very informative sleve notes this is an absolute steal at amazon's current prices. Oh, and just to add there are two versions of this cd. One has a second "bonus" disc comprising of five totally forgettable out takes. My advice; buy whichever version is cheaper.

Okay, confession time - I have never bought a John Denver CD, probably due to his uncool image and also a fear over consistency for a greatest hits CD. Having said that, this seemed to be a good CD to take a risk on, and I have to say I am very glad that I did. If you forget his image (and the guitar on the front helps with that), what you find inside is a great collection of singer-songwriter tunes. "Leaving on A Jet Plane" kicks things off very well, and "Country Roads" and then "Sunshine On My Shoulders follow-on with superb quality. Add to this, "Annie's Song", "I'm Sorry" and the brilliant "Calypso" - and I feel like a convert!!!! As with most of these sort of collections, the quality dips a little at the end, but the lingering feeling is of a quality songwriter who is ready for re-evaluation! I took a similar risk on a Barry Manilow collection, and the inconsistency there was much higher. A bargain at the price.

My wife and I used to listen to John Denver a lot in the car in the 70's when out and about on holiday trips. We had a vinyl album of his hits which was transfered on a casssette tape for ther car. We wanted a CD that we could play in the car or copy to my ipod to play in the car. This one was chosen because it had many of the songs we grew to love at that time. "Take me home county roads" was a particular favourite played in the car whilst driving through country lanes. The quality of the CD is very good and the music and the voice of John Denver is unique. If you kove John Denver you will love this CD.

This is a superb album. We used to have a similar one on a vinyl LP years ago so it brought back great memories. I remembered most of the songs and had forgotten what a good voice John Denver had. There are lots to sing along to on this CD - Calypso, Rocky Mountain High, Take me home country roads, Shanghai Breezes - and I was delighted to find a song I hadn't heard before called Looking for Space which I would imagine he wrote about his own experience. This is an album to play over and over and never tire of. Excellent.
