Devil's Claw root is a traditional African herb widely used for joint pain, muscle pain, as a fever reducer, digestive tonic, and blood purifier. It is also used to support liver, kidney and bladder function. During the 19th century it was brought out of Africa into Europe where it gained popularity for pain management and joint support. Devil's Claw root has been studied extensively in Europe in both humans and animals. It is approved by the European Scientific Cooperative on Phytotherapy as well as by the French Government and Germany's Commission E for pain management, joint support, appetite and digestion, and a number of degenerative conditions of aging. The root contains compounds called iridoid glucosides including harpagoside, the main anti-inflammatory agent. In addition it contains flavonoids and phytosterols with antioxidant and anti-spasmodic properties. The popularity of the herb in Europe has led to a rise in use in the US in recent years, particularly as the dangers of prescription pain killers becomes more obvious. It is also commonly used for pain and joint support in animals. Some trainers of race horses use it to help the horse recover from the exertion of a race. Devil's Claw can help reduce reliance on other pain killers that may have a negative effect on health.
