Michael - this is far from your best novel.
Michael - I think you bit off rather more than you can chew with this story line, and I think you know it.You chose pretty hefty topics - China's home and foreign policy, the flight and plight of Tibetans, death and reincarnation of the Dalai Lama ... and that contrasted with Goodfellowe's (lack of) love life and worries about his daughter. I find there is a huge disrepancy in the dimensions that you are trying to deal with and, while a contrast makes for good reading, the oriental aspect is simply too massive.Detailed descriptions of torture, including one going on for over four pages, are not appropriate for this sort of novel. What on earth did you intend with that? I would have also been happier without your Americanisms - to `fix' everything instead of arrange/ prepare/ repair etc, the toilet being the `john', many questions starting with `So, ..'. However, your later books are far worse in that respect.

Michael Dobbs, the master political story teller.
I have been searching for this book for a number of years and now have it second hand, in good condition and via the Prime postal service. A very happy man!!
