Hi all, pond newbie here. What is the purpose of the two separate components?

Is this suitable for a 3000 litre pond ?

Yes ideal for small ponds but The ultraviolet light That comes with the machine change to burn every 3 to 6 months also The houses to the pump need to be a couple of metre extra long

How long is the cable for the pump?

I have not measured the cable but I would estimate around 12 to 15 feet. Ring the makers of the pump and they will be able to give you the exact measurements.

Cleaning, how do you open this unit to access the sponges etc for a big clean?

Remove the PFC lid. Unfasten the ‘head clasp’ (part 15/22) and remove. Pull the PFC lid (part 8/18) clear of the PFC and place upside down on a flat surface. Remove the filter sponges, clean them and replace. Clean biochemical media. Clean body and all attachments. Reassemble. Above instruction are from the booklet provided by ‘All pond solutions’ With the pump.
