A Great Read
I read an online copy of this biography and I do believe it's a MUST-read for anyone interested in history, and an excellent edition to anyone's personal library. It's well-written, and an easy read, especially since it was written in the 1800s. 3/4 of the biography is dictated by James Allen until he falls fatally ill with influenza, which was going through the prison at that time. The rest of the biography is written by the Warden, and there is a particular excerpt at the end I do not believe James Allen said, but was used as a scare-tactic for other inmates to stop committing crime and instead follow the path of Jesus. (I believe the Warden's chosen spin on this is in due part to the year this was written). Also, there is no mention of Allen's request to have the original biography bound in his own skin. I think this request was fueled by his sickness, because overall the guy seems pretty normal and mainly a victim of circumstance that propelled him into his life of crime. (This is my own interpretation).

Interesting story of a highway robber in the early 1800's ...
Interesting story of a highway robber in the early 1800's. I learned that when this author died, he had his book delivered to the only person who caught him. The book was covered in his own tanned skin and is on display in Boston.

Wrong James Allen
I have not read this book so I apologize for the 1 star but this is NOT the author who wrote "As a Man Thinketh" etc.
