Lonely Planet Provence & the Cote d'Azur (Travel Guide)

Nicely illustrated
From the mightily Lonely Planet, this small format book is packed with lots of useful info. The pages have full colour photos and maps throughout, and the design is most attractive. The text while necessarily concise to pack in all the info is quite engaging, so makes an interesting read when planning trips or just reading about places. The format is small and overall the book is pretty lightweight so can easily be carried around when actually in Provence. There’s also good practical info at the rear, invaluable for planning a trip.

Compact guide book
This is my second Lonely Planet book and it doesnt disappointCover both coastline and mountains of the area so something for anyone going to the area.288 pages in all and 200 of those are guides for the individual areas, other pages cover when to travel, health information, food guides as well as what to expect. Not been to the area before but know it due to go next year so this will be invaluable

Really handy if you are planning on visiting a few places
This is a really nice travel guide. It has plenty of pictures an maps on its matte pages. Lots of info here on not just towns and areas but also public holidays, general opening hours, accessible travel (QR codes to get more info). LGBTQ advice and much more.If you are hiring a car/bike or planning on travelling to a few different towns and areas this is helpfu. If you are planning on staying in just one place you might find it a bit limited but that would go for any travel guide unless it was a specific city or town guide.

Best version yet, all the essentials are covered
This is another great guide to add to my LP collection. I have the original version from over a decade ago (I think) but this version is superior in every way. The layout is much simpler and the pages are easier to quickly scan. The presentation also appears nicer, with better quality paper and finer printing. I prefer the typeface too.As for the writing itself, it’s clear and concise with no needless waffle. Both famous locations and out-of-the-way quieter areas are covered. Reading it makes you want to visit right away.Overall an excellent guide, recommended.

You can never go wrong with a Lonely Planet guide book!
I spent some time in the past traveliing along the coast between Nice and Marseille in an old camper. At the time I had a tatty Lonely Planet guide but it was the France edition and although it was very thick, it didn't possess as much information in it as this Provence and Cote D'Azur edtion does. It was still very useful though.Time has moved on and now we can buy the Lonely Planet guides specific to various regions, which is excellent! I picked this latest 2024 guide up as I am thinking of going down to the south of France again. I have to say, this is an improvement on the old Lonely Planet guide I had. Not that the old one was bad, but this is just much better! This book covers all the places from Monaco to Arles along the coast and inland to Mont Ventoux. You'll learn about seafood from the coastal cities and wines from the mountainous regions. You will also read about festivals, hisorical events and everything in between! It's jam packed full of interesting info.I've always liked Lonely Planet guide books more than the other guide books available. With the 2024 editions, the photography is gorgeous, whilst the writing is still excellent. There seem to be more walking routes than I remember (which is a great addition) and the maps, despite being small, still manage to contain a lot of information. As with all Lonely Planet books, this is packed full of everything you might want to know and places you should visit. I love the fact that they include historical facts as well as places to eat and accommodations to stay at. There are useful tips for your travels and warnings where necessary. The LP guide books are compact enough to fit in a backpack which I always find a bonus.I actually like reading Lonely Planet books in generaal, even if I don't plan on going to visit a place for a while. It helps me to mobilise myself and mentally get excited for a trip to come in the future, even if it might be a long time off. Plus I like history and Lonely Planet guides have useful snippets of interesting facts that I like to read.I think the Lonely Planet books are even better than they have been in the past and the latest 2024 editions are especially good. Highly recommended, even if you don't plan on visiting this region of France anytime soon.

Good general overview and insight to places
The book is filled with lots of travel tips and ideas. If you are after a quick glimpse and are travelling through the Provence & the Cote d'Azur it will be a decent book to have with you. However, if you are planning a more prolonged stay this may not give all that you want out of the local area. For example Cannes had approx. then 3-4 (back-to-back) pages of content, Monaco being about 4 (back-to-back) pages of content.

Good for planning and on the trip, maps a bit lacking
I've generally been a fan of Lonely Planet over the years, and this book takes in a wide area from a little west of Marseille across to Monaco. There's lots to explore here, easily enough for 1-2 weeks and the guide helps plan combining the coast with inland trips, various routes and city guides. There's some nice longer articles in the back which reflect a bit how reader's needs for this book has changed but overall there's lots to read here. The book itself isn't too thick (so fine to carry about) and is good enough quality that it won't get tattered. The maps are a bit rubbish, but I guess generally you would be using your phone for navigation so maybe that doesn't matter

Helpful book. Miss having a separate map.
Lots of photos and good advice. We've used these books for other cities, and a separate takeaway map was included, but not for this edition.

Incomplete guide book
There is little useful information here for me. Map, hotel and restaurant information is scant. For popular destinations like Cassis, no restaurants or hotels are reviewed. Missing St Remy altogether. More focused on lesser known coastal areas. Seems like it would be useful for someone driving around Nice or St Tropez.
