Can this unit be set for twice a day (12 hours apart)- everyday and then the other side be used for manual watering?

It is easy to set for one side automatic and one side manual.  The issue comes when it is left in the sun.  Any prolonged sun exposure ruins the components and housing very fast.

On average how long do the batteries last? Please be specific.

The unit uses 2 AA batteries. I used Duracell batteries in mine as I find them to be the most reliable. I have mounted two of these on a station near my garden but made sure it gets shade pretty much all of the time. I think this helps prolong the life of the unit as it gets over 100 degrees at times where I live. So far, I have seen the batteries last up to two seasons without a problem. This is with using the units every day, twice a day for the whole season which runs five to six months. I removed the batteries from the first unit after the first season just to avoid any leakage and damage but the second year I left them in and used them the next year without a problem. I think good quality batteries and removing them during the winter is wise but I was frankly impressed with how little the units drain the batteries. I guess you could think of it as a clock on the wall, they usually last about a year or so and these units are basically clocks (timers) and a brief opening and closing of a valve. There is an indicator on the face of the unit showing how much power is left in the battery so you can use that as a monitor. I see no problem with these running for a whole season without having to change the batteries. I strongly suggest taking the units indoors during freezing weather as is advised by the manufacturer. Can this product be used in the desert where temperatures can reach 130 degrees Fehranheit?

I can assure you there is no rating available as to high limit of ambient temperature at which this timer might fail.Considering cold water is running through it when valve is open, that should be a positive factor.Otherwise, you guess is as good as mine.

Question 4

Can this be used on a gravity feed system? I have a 2,000 gallon free-standing tank (not connected to city water.)

No. It needs 20 psi to work. One foot of head equals 0.4 psi so your water tank would need to be setting on a 50-foot tower or hill to provide 20 psi.
