A Must Read
Linda Dahl's biography of Mary Lou is a precious document for anyone interested in the history of jazz as well as just how difficult it was for a black woman to succeed in a world of men. Dahl had done an excellent job of researching her life and it was a sad one. Her playing has always appealed to me and one of my favourite cds is 'MY Mama Pinned A Rose On Me. This is a very important book for those men who believe that women cannot play jazz. Mary Lou was something else. And then some.Pilgarlic

Discover Mary Lou!
Mary Lou Williams is wonderful. I look in every used record store that I find for her records. There is a documentary film out too. Also in the documentary film, A Great Day in Harlem, about a famous Esquire magazine photograph, Dizzy Gillespie speaks of her with a profound reverence. Check her out.

One of the great piano players
This book really gives the flavor of Mary Lou Williams life. Research appears to be solid. One of the great piano players, composers, arrangers, educators in jazz. Forget about gender. The book makes you want to explore her music. A worthwhile pursuit.

Fine book, heavily detailed.
Heavily detailed, this is for jazz students only; the general reader would have a difficult time. Still, it is a first class biography, and the author knows both how to do research and to write. What a shame that Mary Lou Williams recordings are so few and so rare. But that was her fault. This excellent musician had serious mental problems that plagued her entire life. After the first couple of hundred pages, one grows weary of her difficulties. But what a portrait of jazz in its most fertile years.
